The Chicago Cubs (76-57) and Arizona Diamondbacks (70-63) wrap-up their series today, with first pitch scheduled for 3:40 PM ET at Chase Field.

Arizona secured a tight 5-4 victory over Chicago last night, leaning on a late home run from Ryan Waldschmidt and an error-free defensive effort. They staged a late comeback with five runs across the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win.

Despite an Ian Happ home run and their own clean defensive sheet, the Cubs fell short as the road team. As this series concludes, Chicago enters the contest ranked fifth overall in the standings, while Arizona sits at tenth. I expect a highly competitive game with serious implications for late-season positioning. Keep reading for the expert picks, props and betting splits for Cubs vs D-backs, below.

Expert Picks and Props for Cubs vs D-backs

When analyzing the slate, I find the strongest value in backing the road underdog in the MLB odds. Chicago brings an elite away offense into this matchup. They rank second across all MLB road teams in runs per game (5.47) and overall OPS (.754).

Moneyline Pick: Chicago Cubs (-105 at Caesars Sportsbook)

Arizona boasts a solid 33-22 outright record as a moneyline favorite this season. However, I expect Chicago’s lineup depth to neutralize the home-field advantage. High-scoring games have been the norm for both clubs recently.

Total-Runs Pick: Over 8.5 (51¢ on Kalshi)

The Over has cashed in 70% of the last 10 games for both Chicago and Arizona. Taking the Over on the prediction market at Kalshi offers a better payout structure than traditional sportsbooks for this specific game script. Finally, my favorite MLB player props target is third baseman Alex Bregman.

Prop Pick: Alex Bregman 1+ Hits (67¢ on Kalshi)

Bregman holds a .333 batting average over 27 career at-bats against Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez according to the MLB batter vs pitcher stats. Backing him to record a base hit yields an attractive price. He has historically seen the ball exceptionally well out of the veteran left-hander’s hand. Rodriguez has been an anchor for the Diamondbacks, maintaining a 2.61 ERA and a 3.79 FIP across 26 starts.

Matthew Boyd has also been effective for the Cubs, piecing together an 11-5 record over 16 starts. While Boyd’s 4.15 ERA trails Rodriguez’s marks, he holds a slight strikeout edge.

Evaluating how each team has faced against the opposing starter reveals significant historical trends. Bregman boasts a highly successful track record against Rodriguez, mashing three home runs and five extra-base hits. Conversely, Max Kepler has struggled mightily against Boyd, striking out seven times and hitting just .100 across 20 career at-bats.

Despite playing away from Wrigley Field, Chicago, a World Series odds contender, consistently pressures opposing pitchers. They hit for over-the-fence power, giving them a distinct advantage over a Diamondbacks lineup that has been surprisingly league-average in their own ballpark. At Chase Field, Arizona manages a middling 4.72 runs per game.

More concerning for Arizona is their lack of home power, ranking 21st in home runs per game (1.01). While both teams generate similar contact quality, Chicago is significantly more successful at translating that contact into extra bases.

Moving over to the MLB public betting splits, where the casual bettors are backing the road team at a solid clip. Chicago commands 58.8% of all moneyline tickets and 77.4% of the total runline handle. Action on the total is fairly balanced, with the Over drawing 59.8% of the tickets and 60.1% of the stake.
