The 2026 college football season is finally here, and I am zeroing in on an ACC clash as the NC State Wolfpack visit the Virginia Cavaliers at Scott Stadium on August 29 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Virginia is already catching a bit of national respect, grabbing a single vote in the initial AP Top 25 poll. Unranked NC State hits the road as an underdog looking to pull off an early upset.
Both teams ended 2025 on a high note. NC State won its last three games to finish with a respectable 8-5 record. Virginia bounced back after losing the ACC Title Game to beat Missouri in the Gator Bowl, finishing 11-3.
I am targeting specific prediction market leans for this matchup. Let’s break down the data so you know exactly where to put your money when the markets open. You can track every number as it moves on our NCAAF odds page.
NC State vs Virginia Odds
Kalshi has live markets posted for this Week 0 ACC matchup, with $197,335 in volume captured for NC State vs Virginia. The key note: I am using the market row pricing, not the stale-looking trade-ticket figure that showed Virginia at 67% while the live row showed 62%.
Virginia is the live Kalshi favorite, with the Cavaliers showing a 62% chance to win at 65¢ Yes and 36¢ No. NC State sits at 38% at 38¢ Yes and 63¢ No. The main spread is Virginia by over 3.5, priced at 52¢ Yes and 49¢ No, while the main total is Over 51.5 at 50¢ Yes and 51¢ No. The biggest takeaway is how little separation there is outside the moneyline — the spread, game total and Virginia team total are all pricing within a few cents of a coin flip, so the moneyline is the only market with a real consensus baked in.
Kalshi is also offering alternate spread rungs at 6.5, 5.5, 4.5, 2.5 and 1.5, plus total rungs at 42.5, 45.5, 48.5, 52.5, 53.5 and 54.5. For team totals, Virginia over 27.5 is at 53¢ Yes with a 51% chance, while NC State over 23.5 is at 53¢ Yes with a 50% chance.

NC State vs Virginia Predictions & Picks
While this game was originally scheduled as a non-conference game, the ACC’s adoption of a ninth conference game over the offseason means that this rivalry game is a conference battle for the Wolfpack and Cavaliers.
NC State vs Virginia Pick #1: Moneyline
I lean toward the Cavaliers as the side to back, and Kalshi’s live market agrees. Virginia is trading at 65¢ Yes with a 62% chance, which is a little higher than my original 55% to 60% projection range but still supported by the matchup profile. The Cavaliers bring a highly efficient offense that averaged 30.5 points and 417.9 total yards per game last season.
The meat and potatoes of this handicap is sustaining drives. Virginia converted an elite 49.8% of its third-down attempts. That gives the Cavaliers a distinct advantage in controlling the field-position battle against NC State, which converted at just a 41.2% clip.
Virginia also excels at creating game-changing plays on defense. The Cavaliers racked up 31 sacks and 14 interceptions last year, finishing with a +7 turnover differential. NC State managed only 20 sacks and a neutral turnover differential. At 65¢, the Virginia moneyline is no longer a deep discount, but it remains my preferred side over buying NC State at 38¢.
- Pick: Virginia to Win — Buy Yes at 65¢ or better on Kalshi.
NC State vs Virginia Pick #2: Game Total
The live Kalshi total is Over 51.5 points, priced at 50¢ Yes with a 50% market chance after a 5-point move downward. I still lean Over at an even-money-style entry because both offenses were consistently productive last season. Virginia scored 30.5 points per game, while NC State posted a nearly identical 30.2 points per game.
The most compelling data point for a shootout is red-zone efficiency. The Wolfpack were incredibly dangerous inside the 20-yard line, boasting a 90.9% conversion rate. Virginia was also highly reliable in scoring position, converting 82.8% of its trips.
With two offenses that consistently finish drives with points rather than settling for empty possessions, I am comfortable targeting the Over 51.5 at 50¢. I would be more selective if the market jumps above 52.5 or 53.5, but the current main line is playable. - Pick: Over 51.5 — Buy Yes at 50¢ on Kalshi.
NC State vs Virginia Stats
Note: All figures referenced below are total and per-game statistics from the 2025 regular season, utilized here to provide historical performance benchmarks.
When evaluating this matchup, the most glaring statistical mismatch is Virginia’s highly efficient offense against an NC State defense that struggles to create negative plays. Virginia operates a balanced, ground and pound offense that amassed 303 first downs last year.
With 2,502 total rushing yards returning, the Cavaliers are poised for success against a Wolfpack defense that only managed 13 total takeaways. This lack of disruption bodes well for Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula. I expect him to have great pocket presence and comfortably hand off to running back Jekail Middlebrook to control the tempo.
Formerly of Penn State and Missouri, Pribula has 326 career pass attempts with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Last season, Pribula played in 10 games, racking up 1,941 passing yards and 297 rushing yards.
Conversely, when the Wolfpack have the ball, quarterback CJ Bailey will rely on receivers Joshisa Trader and Victor Snow. They face a daunting task against a Virginia defense that thrives on defensive schemes designed to create havoc.
A Miami transfer, expect Trader to be the top receiver in NC State’s offense. If available in your area, check out the overs on his props or for him to cash in a touchdown.
Virginia logged 21 total takeaways last season. If their pass rush pressures Bailey into rushed throws, their defensive playmaking will be the deciding factor that secures a home victory.
