Week 1 of college football is finally here, and the biggest availability story has nothing to do with an injury. A judge ruled against the NCAA on September 3 and opened a door for two former NFL players to suit up for LSU. One day later, the Tigers released a roster without them.

That is the headline, but it is far from the only name worth knowing. Notre Dame is missing eight guys at Lambeau Field. Virginia has 16 players ruled out. Kansas State is patching together an offensive line.

Week 1 College Football Injury Report

Is Dae’Quan Wright Playing for LSU?

No. Wright is not playing Saturday night against Clemson.

A Louisiana judge ruled against the NCAA on September 3. That opened a path for former NFL players to rejoin college rosters. Wright, a tight end who signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent, was the headline name.

Then LSU released its 103-man roster. Wright was not on it. Neither was Zxavian Harris, the 6-foot-8, 330-pound tackle who briefly signed with the Saints before a foot injury ended that run.

Both are still enrolled. Week 2 against Louisiana Tech on September 12 is the next window. Winning in court and being cleared to play are two different things.

A third name, defensive back Blake Cotton, was reported as an LSU target. Denver signed him June 18 and waived him with an injury designation July 31. He is not on LSU’s public roster either.

LSU and Clemson Injuries

Quarterback Sam Leavitt is the name that moves the number. The Arizona State transfer had Lisfranc surgery, then a second procedure in April to remove pins. He missed most of spring practice.

He has been a full participant all fall and is expected to start. One flag: receiver Winston Watkins Jr. practiced in a non-contact jersey on August 14 and carried a questionable tag. No named clearance has come since.

Dabo Swinney confirmed two season-ending ACL tears on September 1. Safety Polo Anderson and linebacker Joseph Roberto II are done. Neither had a starting job locked up, so treat these as depth losses.

Receiver T.J. Moore is the Clemson name to watch. He practiced August 21 but had not gone through a live scrimmage. Track the number on our college football odds page as these firm up.

Notre Dame Is Thin at Lambeau

The Irish carry the longest list of any marquee Week 1 team. Eight players are out for Sunday night against Wisconsin.

Receiver Quincy Porter is out with a left knee injury. The five-star Ohio State transfer was projected to start outside. Lineman Charles Jagusah is out with a left humerus injury.

Also out: Matty Augustine, Chris Burgess Jr., Tiki Hola, Ko’o Kia, Chaz Smith and Chris Terek. Three are offensive linemen, which hurts a team already thin at tackle. True freshmen Charlie Thom and Grayson McKeogh back up starter Will Black.

Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is questionable with a left knee issue. He had 48 tackles and three sacks last year before tearing his ACL. Expect limited snaps if he plays.

Pass Rush and Line Problems

South Carolina opens against Kent State without two big pieces. Edge rusher Dylan Stewart had 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks last year. He is dealing with a back injury dating to 2025.

Left tackle Jacarrius Peak hurt his knee playing pickup basketball in February. Shane Beamer said he did not expect either player to go. Peak is targeting a Week 3 return. New kicker Ethan Sanchez was approved by the SEC but will not kick this week.

Virginia is in the worst shape of any Power Four team. The Cavaliers listed 18 injured players, with 16 ruled out. Four receivers are gone: Rico Flores Jr., Dillon Newton-Short, Isaiah Robinson and Triston Ward.

Kansas State has an ugly cluster up front. John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick are out for the year. Oliver Miller misses several weeks. Guard Tanner Morley is day-to-day, with Ryan Howard expected at left tackle.

• Alabama: AK Dear is out past the East Carolina opener. Receiver Noah Rogers is expected out. Running back EJ Crowell should play.
• Texas Tech: Brendan Sorsby cannot play in 2026. Will Hammond starts against Abilene Christian.
• Tennessee: Arion Carter sits out Furman on a one-game suspension, cut down from two. Tight end Ethan Davis is available.
• Baylor: Ashton Jones is out for the season. Dawson Pendergrass is back at full speed.
• Ohio State: Bo Jackson is questionable with a shoulder issue against Ball State.

Cleared to Play

Plenty of guys got good news this week. Do not let an old questionable tag fool you.

Texas left tackle Trevor Goosby is cleared after a knee bone bruise, though Steve Sarkisian may manage his workload. Louisville running back Isaac Brown is ready for Ole Miss, per Jeff Brohm.

Georgia center Drew Bobo and edge Gabe Harris took every rep, per Kirby Smart. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings is expected to go against Florida State.

Oregon gets running back Jordon Davison with no limits and lineman Dave Iuli back from a triceps issue. The Ducks are still down Brayden Platt, Tony Cumberland and Dillon Gresham. Receiver Jalen Lott is questionable.

Michigan loses tackle Andrew Babalola to an ACL setback. Edge John Henry Daley, safety Rod Moore and edge Dominic Nichols are available, but Moore’s staff was careful to say he is not back to his old level.

What to Check Before Kickoff

Roughly 38 Power Four players carry firm out tags for Week 1. More than 100 others are listed as questionable.

A few names could still flip. Watch Viliamu-Asa, Watkins and Moore in the LSU game, Morley at Kansas State and Lott at Oregon.
