- Formula 1’s first weekend at Madring plays like Monaco on steroids, with blind corners, walls, and almost no room to pass
- Our lineup pairs Verstappen at captain with pole-adjacent Antonelli and three affordable drivers starting near the points

Formula 1’s first weekend at Madring has felt like Monaco on steroids. The new Madrid circuit combines blind corners, elevation changes and unforgiving walls with enough speed to make every mistake feel considerably more expensive.
We have already seen that difficulty throughout practice. Arvid Lindblad crashed in FP2, while Lewis Hamilton and Oliver Bearman both found the wall in FP3. Lando Norris lost most of Friday afternoon to a gearbox problem, then recovered to steal the pole from Kimi Antonelli by only 0.011 seconds.
Passing appears likely to be another challenge. The circuit offers few clean opportunities, several corners funnel the field onto one preferred line and following another car closely will not be easy. That makes qualifying position especially valuable and puts even more importance on the launch into Turn 1.
Our DraftKings lineup attacks that setup from both directions. We are loading up on drivers starting near the front while using three affordable options already positioned in or around the points.

Spanish Grand Prix F1 DFS Picks
Max Verstappen (Captain) ($14,100) – Start: 3rd
Verstappen starts third after qualifying only 0.140 seconds behind Norris. He was not the fastest driver in any of the three practice sessions, but Red Bull kept him within striking distance while the team worked through its setup on a completely new circuit.
The starting position is the important piece. Verstappen will begin directly behind Antonelli and on the same side of the grid as the Mercedes. If Antonelli attacks Norris into Turn 1, Verstappen could have an opportunity to follow him through or capitalize if the two leaders compromise each other.
Our model projects Verstappen to finish third and score 42 DraftKings points before the captain multiplier. That becomes 63 points in the captain position.
Norris and Antonelli might have slightly stronger median projections, but their salaries become difficult to accommodate at captain. Verstappen gives us access to a potential winner without forcing us into multiple punt plays from the final rows of the grid.
And listen, he’s still Max Verstappen. If we are going to ask someone to negotiate Monaco on steroids while simultaneously searching for a place to pass, there are worse options.
Kimi Antonelli ($13,400) – Start: 2nd
Antonelli has been the most consistently impressive driver of the weekend.
Mercedes opened with a one-two in FP1, with Antonelli finishing 0.286 seconds behind George Russell. He then led FP2, topped FP3 and missed the pole by only 0.011 seconds after Norris produced one of the best qualifying laps of his career.
Our model projects Antonelli to win the race and lead the slate with 52 DraftKings points.
Starting second may not be entirely disadvantageous, either. During Saturday’s Formula 3 race, the preferred launch into Turn 1 appeared to come from Antonelli’s side of the grid. It is a small sample on a brand-new surface, but it gives the Mercedes driver a realistic chance to challenge Norris immediately.
Antonelli has already demonstrated his ability to capitalize on race starts this season. If he wins the launch, the difficulty of passing could allow him to control the race from the front. Even if Norris holds the position, Antonelli has enough raw speed to remain a leading podium candidate.
We are pairing the two drivers our model projects to finish first and third.
Spanish Grand Prix DFS Strategy: The Value Plays
Arvid Lindblad ($5,800) – Start: 10th
Lindblad’s weekend has already included the full street-circuit experience.
He showed legitimate speed in FP2, climbing to fourth before crashing heavily at Turn 6. The Racing Bulls crew repaired the car, and Lindblad responded by advancing to Q3 and qualifying 10th.
That recovery tells us the speed before the accident was not a fluke.
Lindblad starts directly behind Colapinto and is projected to finish 10th with 25 DraftKings points. He gives us another inexpensive driver positioned ahead of the midfield traffic, and Racing Bulls has displayed competitive pace throughout the weekend.
The walls create obvious retirement risk, particularly after Friday’s accident. At $5,800, however, we are willing to accept it for a driver who has already shown top-five practice speed and secured a top-10 starting position.
Franco Colapinto ($5,000) – Start: 9th
Colapinto is the first of three inexpensive drivers that make this stars-and-scrubs construction possible.
The Alpine driver qualified ninth and advanced to Q3 on merit. That is important at a track where drivers starting outside the top 10 may spend most of Sunday staring at the same rear wing.
Our model is slightly more conservative and projects Colapinto to finish 10th, but that would still provide a useful result at $5,000. He is projected for 24 DraftKings points and offers one of the strongest point-per-dollar values in the lineup.
The difficult passing conditions should help Colapinto protect the track position he earned in qualifying. If he avoids trouble and converts his ninth-place starting position into a top-10 finish, he can comfortably outperform this salary.
Esteban Ocon ($3,800) – Start: 13th
Ocon is the salary-saving piece that allows everything else to fit.
He starts 13th and is projected to finish in the same position. That does not sound especially exciting, but excitement is not required at $3,800. We need Ocon to keep the car clean, avoid losing positions and collect whatever becomes available when someone ahead inevitably treats a concrete barrier like an optional suggestion.
Our model projects Ocon for 18 DraftKings points. That is nearly five points per $1,000 of salary.
Bearman’s FP3 crash also leaves the other Haas at the back of the field, which should improve Ocon’s opportunity to beat his teammate and potentially secure the corresponding DraftKings bonus.
F1 DFS Picks: Red Bull Constructor
Red Bull Constructor ($7,700) – Start: 3rd/8th
Red Bull provides access to two drivers starting inside the top eight without requiring us to pay the premium attached to Mercedes, McLaren or Ferrari.
Verstappen starts third and Liam Lawson starts eighth. Both drivers are positioned to score points, and Verstappen has legitimate podium and victory potential.
The concern is that Lawson was puzzled by the team’s loss of performance in qualifying after showing stronger speed earlier in the weekend. Still, starting eighth is valuable at a circuit where passing may be painful.
Red Bull also fits naturally with Verstappen at captain. A Verstappen victory, fastest lap or extended period at the front would raise the ceiling of both positions simultaneously.
The lineup leaves $200 unused, but that is not a problem. We are prioritizing the construction that gives us Verstappen, Antonelli, three value drivers starting 13th or better and a constructor with both cars inside the top eight.
At a circuit this narrow, Sunday may become an expensive parade interrupted by occasional carbon-fiber confetti. We want our drivers near the front when it begins.
