South Dakota State (7-2, 4-1 MVFC) visits Northern Iowa (4-4, 3-2 MVFC) after both teams won last week. The Jackrabbits beat South Dakota 31-21, while the Panthers handled Indiana State 45-23.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) on Saturday, November 7, 2026, under the roof of the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The indoor setting takes weather out of the handicapping equation.
South Dakota State arrives as a heavy road favorite, with quarterback Chase Mason back in the lineup since Oct. 17. The key matchup is the Jackrabbits’ rushing attack against a Northern Iowa defense that has struggled to slow the run.
South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa Prediction
My South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa prediction starts with the gap between these two teams. The Jackrabbits average 36.44 points per game and allow just 16.33, a margin of about 20 points per game.
Northern Iowa has been far more even on the scoreboard, scoring 27 points per game and allowing 27.38. I am comfortable laying the points with the road favorite and expect both offenses to contribute enough to push this game past the total.
South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa Odds
Odds from FanDuel as of November 7. Compare prices with our College Football betting apps.
The South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa odds have the Jackrabbits favored by just over two touchdowns. A -650 moneyline implies an 86.7% chance of an outright win before adjusting for the sportsbook’s margin. My FCS picks focus on the spread and total instead of that expensive moneyline.
South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa FCS Picks
FCS Pick #1: South Dakota State -14.5
The heart of this handicap is South Dakota State’s rushing attack against Northern Iowa’s defensive front. The Jackrabbits average 259.3 rushing yards and 471.2 total yards per game, while the Panthers allow 178.0 rushing yards per game. When one team controls the trenches this thoroughly, it dictates the clock and wears down the opposing defense.
Josiah Johnson should surpass 1,000 rushing yards this season today. The sophomore has scampered for 10 touchdowns, leading a spectacular offense. Last week against South Dakota, Johnson ran for 126 yards and a touchdown. He has averaged a robust 6.0 yards per carry this season.
The matchup flips the other way when Northern Iowa has the ball. South Dakota State allows just 108.1 rushing yards per game, and the Panthers have 987 rushing yards on the season. That puts more weight on Jaxon Dailey, who has completed 139 of 228 passes for 1,674 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. Northern Iowa simply cannot afford to fall behind.
Mason also gives South Dakota State a steady hand. This season, he has completed 97 of 174 passes for 1,432 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. Josh Holst threw for 461 yards and five touchdowns without an interception while filling in. The Jackrabbits have committed only seven turnovers all year.
FCS Pick #2: Over 50.5
These teams combine to average 63.44 points per game, nearly 13 points above this total. South Dakota State scores 36.44 points per game, and Northern Iowa allows 27.38, so the Jackrabbits’ offense has a favorable matchup to approach its average.
The bigger question is whether Northern Iowa can do its part against a defense allowing 16.33 points per game. The Panthers don’t need to match their average. If South Dakota State hits its scoring norm, roughly 15 points from Northern Iowa would push this over 50.5. A Panthers offense that just put up 45 on Indiana State is capable of getting there.
I expect a score in the realm of South Dakota State 35, Northern Iowa 20.
South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa Betting Splits
Betting splits from Sportradar as of November 6.
The South Dakota State vs Northern Iowa betting splits show two different approaches to this matchup. Nearly all moneyline bettors back the Jackrabbits, but Northern Iowa has attracted 74.05% of the spread handle on 71.82% of tickets. My South Dakota State -14.5 pick goes against that spread support.
The Over 50.5 has drawn 90.47% of the total handle and 89.93% of tickets, aligning with my second FCS pick. Those figures describe where the bets are going; the case for the Over rests on the offenses and matchup discussed above.
