  • PointsBet Canada signs deal to become official sports betting partner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment
  • MLSE agreed to similar deal with FanDuel Sportsbook last week
  • Privately-operated online sportsbooks began launching across Ontario on April 4

One week into the launch of licensed and regulated online sports betting across the province of Ontario, and PointsBet appears to have landed the biggest catch of them all.

PointsBet Canada and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) have agreed to a multi-year partnership. The new deal makes PointsBet an Official Sports Betting Partner of all five of MLSE professional teams. Those teams are the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Toronto Marlies (AHL), Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto Argonauts (CFL), and Toronto FC (MLS).

Maple Leaf Brand Offers PointsBet Canada National Scope

Making this new deal is massive for PointsBet Canada. The MLSE brand is the largest in the country and it’s also the one with the farthest-reaching scope. The Maple Leafs are widely known as Canada’s team. Leaf Nation stretches across the country from coast to coast. Other Canadian teams can often be left to feel like an away team in their own rink when the Maple Leafs come to town.

And as Canada’s only current NBA team, the Raptors are truly the country’s team.

“You rarely get the opportunity to partner with an organization that spans across all four professional leagues through the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts, and offers year-round entertainment within the sports market in Canada,” Scott Vanderwel, CEO of PointsBet Canada, said in a statement.

Industry insiders were viewing a deal with the powerful MLSE brand as the gold standard of online sports betting partnerships in Canada. It’s the biggest promotional partnership in the Canada sports betting landscape.

The deal features wide-ranging media and promotional opportunities for PointsBet Canada. These include advertising inside all of MLSE’s stadiums and arenas, including rink board advertising for every game. PointsBet will also gain signage on the giant digital board outside Scotiabank Arena, home to the Maple Leafs and Raptors. That sign is visible from the Gardiner Expressway, one of the busiest roadways in the Greater Toronto Area.

PointsBet Moving Aggressively Into Canada

PointsBet Canada previously inked partnership deals with the NHL Alumni, Curling Canada, and the CFL’s Ottawa RedBlacks. The company also signed Canadian pop culture icons the Trailer Park Boys to serve as brand ambassadors.

Julian, Ricky and Bubbles have already appeared in ads alongside former NHLers Paul Coffey, Mike Vernon, and Stu Grimson. They also filmed a curling spot featuring world champions Kevin Koe and Ben Herbert, along with Canadian women’s champions Kerri Einarson and Shannon Birchard.

“That was unbelievable,” Hockey Hall of Famer, Norris Trophy winner, and three-time Stanley Cup champion Coffey said of working alongside the boys from Sunnyvale Trailer Park.

Clearly, though, landing a deal with MLSE is the jewel in the PointsBet Canada crown.

“MLSE’s franchises are some of our country’s most iconic teams,” Nic Sulsky, Chief Commercial Officer for PointsBet Canada, said in a statement.
