Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s Boxing Pedigree

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has faltered in recent years in some high-profile bouts. But he is a tremendous fighter with a notable level of elite skill.

The former middleweight kingpin is looking to prove to the broader boxing public that he has firmly dedicated himself to the sport.

Chavez Jr has even talked about campaigning for future bouts like a rematch with Canelo Alvarez following Saturday’s fight.

Anderson Silva: The Cage to the Ring

Anderson Silva is a combat sports icon who holds a myriad of UFC records despite his recent rough skid as of late (1-7 with one no-contest across his last 9). The 45-year-old warrior has had over 45 MMA bouts in his combat endeavors.

Unlike with previous MMA/ Boxing crossover bouts like McGregor vs Mayweather or Askren vs Paul, Silva is not stepping into the ring here as a boxing neophyte.

Silva has had a dozen amateur bouts in the big gloves and has also had a pair of professional boxing bouts. Anderson Silva crushed Julio Cesar De Jesus via second-round KO in their August 2005 cruiserweight contest.

Despite the pronounced experience deficit for The Spider, he comes into this Chavez Jr fight with a notable five-inch reach advantage.

Silva will have the overall size advantage in this one as he has had bouts at 185 and 205 pounds. While for Chavez Jr., he has largely fought at 160 and 175 pounds.

This fight is scheduled for eight rounds and I think we see this one go the full distance. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been predicting he will KO Silva in the lead up to this fight, but I foresee Silva being durable enough to weather the storm.

I think Anderson Silva is a crafty enough fighter who has the experience, and savvy to stay in there. Silva will show some flashes of the old magic, but this is still Chavez Jr’s sport.

I think it will be a reasonably competitive fight that stays locked within some part of the continuum of pugilistic parity. But I see Chavez Jr ending up running away with a decision victory this weekend.

Pick: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (-300)
