Miguel Berchelt vs Eleazar Valenzuela is the next permutation of Top Rank’s Summer Series. The boxing bout goes on ESPN. A great night of action is set to go at Gimnasio TV Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.

Valenzuela is a former Mexican Pacific Coast junior bantamweight champion. He steps up several rungs on the proverbial ladder here. He takes on someone who has been a dominant champion for several years at the world title level. Berchelt will compete in a higher division for this one (lightweight) and this attraction is a non-title affair. Miguel Berchelt’s first non-title bout in half a decade.

Miguel Berchelt’s Boxing Legacy

Berchelt is the reigning WBC world super featherweight champion. His last outing saw him successfully defend that crown against Jason Sosa via fourth-round KO. The goal seems to be booking Berchelt opposite Oscar Valdez later in the calendar year. The respective handlers of each fighter have booked them some stay busy fights. Valdez is slated to fight Jayson Valez in late July. So as to minimize the risk associated with derailing the mapped out Valdez vs Berchelt bout.

Some pundits pontificate on whether or not this resembles a permanent lightweight move for Berchelt. I think it’s more of a by-product of the COVID era with weight cutting not being a smart idea. Draining ones’ self and becoming more immunocompromised by cutting water weight is objectively not advisable. Ergo this fight being at lightweight instead of super featherweight.

Valenzuela Stepping Up Huge Against Berchelt

Eleazar Valenzuela certainly likes to maintain a busy schedule. He fought seven times last year alone and reached nearly 40 or so fights by the age of 25.  Valenzuela does well against club circuit caliber fighters but frequently falters when stepping up to that next level of competition. Consistency is an issue as well for Valenzuela who is 2-2 with one no-contest across his last five prizefights.

Valenzuela occupies that journeyman tier in the boxing hierarchy. Berchelt is the number one ranked fighter in the world at 130 lbs in the eyes of many. It is a herculean task for Valenzuela that awaits him this weekend. With COVID-19 and the no fans in attendance era of events, a lot of promoters are biding their time. Looking to book the big box office draw matchups when there’s an actual box office for fans to utilize. This is why these sorts of fights that are almost entirely devoid of parity are taking place.

Despite the transparency of this fight booking, Berchelt is by no means overlooking his opponent. Regardless of what oddsmakers and the public at large think. He has a level of familiarity with Valenzuela’s skillset, understands that there is “no small opponent in the ring”, and is laser-focused for Saturday night.

Despite experiences against former world champions/ world title challengers and his impressive KO rate (76 percent), Valenzuela is still levels below where Berchelt is at. In conclusion, I see Miguel Berchelt stopping his opponent inside of six rounds when Berchelt vs Valenzuela goes down.

Pick: Miguel Berchelt (-9675)
