Who Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin fight next is something on the minds of fight fans heading into 2021. Both men are coming off of emphatic victories in their last outings, and the paths ahead for each seem quite compelling.
With Canelo and Golovkin holding gold at super middleweight and middleweight respectively, there is a whole crop of options available for both of these titans of the sweet science.

Canelo’s First Foe for the New Year
The biggest favorite for Canelo’s next adversary is Caleb Plant (+150). Saunders is the second heaviest favorite (+225), and both of these choices make sense as it aligns with Alvarez’s mapped out goals.
After a masterclass performance against Callum Smith that saw him wrest away Smith’s super-middleweight belts, Alvarez wants to unify the entire division with the major belt holders at 168 pounds being Plant and Saunders.
The option of GGG (+250) makes a degree of sense considering the past history that the two have with each other. The two had a pair of hotly contested bouts with one another and many fans of the sweet science have been clamoring for a three-peat with these warriors.
The GGG option is dicey though just because Canelo already has a 1-0-1 record against him despite the controversial nature of those prizefights. I feel like Alvarez isn’t super interested in that specific matchup at this juncture because the reward component isn’t there for him like it is for GGG.
I would eliminate options like Artur Beterbiev (+500) and Dmitry Bivol (+475) as it romanticizes the notion Alvarez goes back to light heavyweight.
I think Canelo’s title-winning effort in that division against Sergey Kovalev was a calculated, short-term move so I do not see these kinds of bouts happening at least for the next two or three years.
Also, another possible name that doesn’t even appear on this list of possible opponents is Alvarez’s WBC mandatory contender at super-middleweight, Avni Yildirim.
Options do abound, but I lean into the heavy favorite here. He does need to get past Caleb Truax this January, but ultimately I do see Caleb Plant being the next opponent for Canelo.

Golovkin’s Path Ahead in 2021
On the heels of finishing the previously undefeated Kamil Szeremeta, GGG has restored a certain level of luster to himself that the loss to Alvarez momentarily took away.
Billy Joe Saunders (+200) is the most sizeable favorite to step into the ring next with Golovkin. This is curious because that would presume that Golovkin jumps up to super middleweight to contend for Saunders’ hardware.
The least likely person to next fight GGG is Oscar De La Hoya (+4000). De La Hoya has mentioned the idea of a comeback, characterized GGG as a casual task for him, and that definitely did not sit well with Golovkin.

Fight game politics lead me to believe that relevant, divisionally appropriate fights with Andrade (+300) and Charlo (+400) at middleweight won’t come to fruition next.
In the end, I think Golovkin looks for a fresh coat of paint in a new weight category. Gennady Golovkin’s last outing saw him notch a history making title defense as he maintained his hold on the middleweight hardware for an unprecedented 21st time.
GGG is also in his late 30’s so his body probably would reap the benefits of not depleting himself too much for that bigger cut to 160 pounds.
I think Golovkin makes a foray towards 168 pounds and vies for Saunders’ hardware next.
