Canelo Favored in Opening Boxing Odds

Canelo was seemingly vying for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. Also, a legacy minded catchweight fight against cruiserweight titleholder Badou Jack was talked about.

Those didn’t materialize and instead takes on a different bout that has been thought of on and off in the past. When Canelo was the lineal WBC middleweight champ years ago, discussions were in play to fight then-interim champ Charlo but the business negotiations never got to where they needed to be.

This bout on Mexican Independence Day weekend follows up from his last fight which was tied into Cinco De Mayo celebrations.

The Mexican icon and the biggest superstar in boxing today also reportedly intends for the same schedule in 2024 to close out this industry-shaking deal.

Charlo an underdog vs Canelo

Charlo is the WBC middleweight champion and will be moving up to 168 pounds for the first time ever as a pro. He is doing so in the pursuit of vying for Canelo’s undisputed crown at super middleweight.

It has been over two years since Charlo last fought. The former 154-pound titleholder will seek out a world title accolade in a third division this Fall. Mental health issues were the given reason for the hiatus. But things are seemingly rectified enough for him to now challenge one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the sport today.

That aforementioned context is important because an in-form, consistent Charlo is a competitive out for anyone around those weight divisions.

The competitive dormancy though is very much a noticeable factor. This is what informs the current line and how oddsmaker perceptions could go in the coming months.

Expected Alvarez vs Charlo Odds Movement

In terms of how the odds will move closer to the fight, I feel like Canelo will still remain an ample favorite. The inactivity and size disadvantage Charlo faces here is too much in my estimation.

The hurdles at play contribute to my thinking. But the line could be much closer if Charlo was more active in recent years.

Though Canelo has seemingly lost a bit of a step according to fans and pundits alike. Though some have seen this across his last couple of performances, I still feel like he should remain a sizable favorite here.

All that being said, this adds to what has been a stacked year so far for boxing and what looks to be a huge blockbuster year going ahead. Davis vs Garcia, the looming Spence vs Crawford, and now Canelo vs Charlo creates a schedule that should be tantalizing for any aficionado of the pugilism.
