When looking at the Big Ten Standings, there is one team at the head of the pack, only one team below .500, and a glutton of other squads battling for position and the opportunity to play when the NCAA tournament comes around in March.
On Thursday, January 19th, two of those sides that are desperate to make a run during the rest of the regular season clash when the Michigan Wolverines (10-7, 9-8 ATS) are in College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins (11-6, 10-7 ATS).
This Big Ten battle will be televised on ESPN with the tip scheduled to go at 7:00 pm ET from the Xfinity Center.
Have a look at the Michigan vs Maryland odds below as we also offer up our best bet and pick for this game.

Even though they had their worst game of the season the last time they faced Michigan, the Terrapins are 2.5-point favorites this time around.

It appears the sportsbooks are counting on somewhat of a revenge factor taking place as things can’t possibly get any worse for Maryland in this one.
Michigan Wolverines Finding Offensive Game
Save for a horrible shooting game against Michigan State on January 7th, when they lost 59-53, the Wolverines have been lighting the hoop on fire in the new year. In their other four contests since the calendar flipped to 2023, they’ve averaged 82 points per outing.
One of those games was an 81-46 beatdown against their opponents on Thursday night, the Terrapins. In that game, big man Hunter Dickinson showed why he should be considered a contender in the odds to win college basketball’s player of the year award, leading the charge with 32 points and 12 rebounds.

Michigan would be wise to feed him again in this one until the Terps prove they have some kind of answer for the center. Recently, the Wolverines have owned the head-to-head matchup against Maryland, taking nine out of the last 10 games between the two sides.
Offense is where Michigan can really do some damage to their opponents, especially when you consider the combination of Dickinson, the coach’s son, Jett Howard and sophomore Kobe Bufkin. The trio combines for over 45 points per outing.
Maryland Terrapins Get it Done With Defense
Although they haven’t lived up to expectation of late, the Terrapins rely on their defense for success, unlike their opponents from Michigan. According to KenPom, Maryland have the 37th best adjusted defensive efficiency in the nation.
They’ll definitely need more effort on their side of the timeline than they displayed last time they faced the Wolverines. In that game, Maryland allowed 50% shooting from the floor and 81 points, well above their season average of 64.9.
Every Maryland Terrapins basketball game recently:
1. Fall way behind early
2. Come all the way back and take the lead
3. Fall behind again as one opposing player has a career day
4. Lose— Tom Roussey (@tomroussey7news) January 10, 2022
In their last 10 outings, the Terps have hit the under eight times. They’ll need a boost from their offense to have a realistic chance in this one, as they’ve scored over 70 points just four times in their last 10 contests.
Michigan vs Maryland Pick and Prediction
Playing in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball makes each of these squads a dangerous side to any of the favorites in the odds to win March Madness, but right now, they are just fighting for their lives to make the Big Dance first.

While Maryland has shown the ability to stifle teams with their defense, they’ve been too inconsistent in that aspect of the game lately and have fallen in five of their last seven after starting the season with a 9-1 record.
Considering the way Michigan, and particularly Dickinson handled them in the last outing, it’s kind of surprising to find Maryland as the chalk in the college basketball odds this time around.
Furthermore, not only has Michigan won nine out of the last 10 meetings between these two, but they’ve also covered the spread in eight of the last nine matchups. That includes four times when Maryland were the home side.
With all that being said, we like Michigan to run their win streak over the Terps to six games when they do battle on Thursday evening.
