  • The Floyd of Rosedale is on the line Saturday in Minneapolis
  • Iowa’s ground game meets a Minnesota defense ranked 18th nationally
  • Read below for my Iowa vs Minnesota prediction and the best value on the board

The No. 15 Iowa Hawkeyes (5-1, 2-1 in the Big Ten) travel to Minneapolis to battle the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-2, 2-1 in the Big Ten) in the latest chapter of the Floyd of Rosedale rivalry. Both programs are fighting to climb the Big Ten standings, making this a pivotal late-October clash.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 24, at Huntington Bank Stadium. Overcast skies and winds around 13 mph are expected, conditions that could put extra weight on both running games. Let’s dig into the stats and find the best value in the college football odds.

Iowa vs Minnesota Prediction

  • Minnesota +7.5 (-111 at BetMGM)

My Iowa vs Minnesota prediction is Minnesota +7.5. Minnesota has won six consecutive Big Ten home games, making Huntington Bank Stadium a difficult stop for conference opponents. While Iowa has dominated this rivalry recently, covering a 7.5-point road spread in a low-total Big Ten game is a tall task.

Minnesota’s defense ranks 18th nationally in total defense, allowing 288.8 yards per game, and its pass defense ranks ninth at 159.7 yards allowed. If the Gophers can clog the running lanes and force Iowa quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski into obvious passing downs, they have a realistic path to keeping this within one score.

Under 40.5 is my favorite Iowa vs Minnesota pick, based on the expected conditions and both offensive profiles. Iowa’s offense runs through running back Kamari Moulton, who exploded for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in his last game. The Hawkeyes average 194 rushing yards per game, and a game built around the run tends to keep the clock moving and limit possessions.

Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey has thrown for 1,335 yards across six games, but the Gophers average just 104.8 rushing yards per game. They now face an Iowa defense allowing only 84.7 rushing yards and 14.5 points per game. If Minnesota can’t establish the run, it will have to move the ball through the air with the wind a possible factor. Expect a methodical, low-scoring game. Something to the tune of Iowa 20, Minnesota 17 or Iowa 21, Minnesota 14 would satisfy both the Minnesota spread and the under.

At least 44 points have been scored in each of the last two matchups, but both of those games were resounding Iowa wins (31-14 and 41-3). I think Minnesota will keep it close enough on Saturday afternoon.

Floyd of Rosedale Odds

Iowa Hawkeyes-7.5 (-108)-303Over 40.5 (-111)
Minnesota Golden Gophers+7.5 (-111)+240Under 40.5 (-108)

Odds via BetMGM, as of October 24.

BetMGM lists Iowa as a 7.5-point road favorite at -303 on the moneyline, while Minnesota is +240 to win outright. The most important number is the 40.5 total, a low line that reflects two defenses allowing a combined 36.3 points per game. Iowa vs Minnesota Key Matchup and Rivalry

Iowa recently dominated the Floyd of Rosedale, beating the Golden Gophers in 10 of the last 11 meetings, including five straight wins in Minneapolis. However, this year’s clash features some intriguing matchups that could test that trend.

The focal point will be Iowa’s ground game against Minnesota’s defensive front. Iowa averages 403.2 total yards and 31 points per game, and Moulton has piled up 519 yards on 76 carries, an average of 6.83 yards per attempt. Hecklinski was efficient in his first career start at Washington, completing 14 of 19 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a 215.1 passer rating.

On the flip side, Minnesota’s offense ranks 109th nationally. Lindsey will look to connect with wideout Javon Tracy, who has 375 receiving yards, against an Iowa defense allowing 208.7 passing yards per game. Ball security could also decide the margin, as Minnesota has committed seven giveaways to Iowa’s three.

In fairness to Minnesota, the Golden Gophers hold the lifetime edge 63-54-2. That said, Iowa has a winning record over Minnesota since Minnesota’s 12-0 start in the series between 1891 and 1916.
