Expect Notre Dame to control the tempo of this contest with its dominant rushing attack. Jeremiah Love and Jadarian Price combined for over 1,800 yards and 24 total touchdowns last season and will spearhead the Fighting Irish offense once again.

Look for Notre Dame to milk the clock and aim to limit mistakes. Starting a redshirt freshman quarterback on the road comes with its own challenges, and the Fighting Irish are unlikely to put the pressure of this Week 1 contest into CJ Carr’s inexperienced hands.

A redshirt freshman making his first collegiate start on the road against Miami is bound to struggle. We saw Arch Manning put up only 38 first-half passing yards yesterday, and I expect to see more of the same in Miami vs Notre Dame.

Defenses are generally a step ahead of their offensive counterparts early in the season, and we saw a number of high-profile contests finish well under the total on Saturday. Marcus Freeman is a conservative, defensive coach, and he understands Notre Dame’s advantage in this contest is the strength of his offensive line and rushing attack.

There’s no reason to take the training wheels off of Carr in a tough matchup on the road. Miami’s defensive strength comes from its edge rushers, Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr, who combined for nine sacks last season. That duo will make life tough on Notre Dame’s freshman pivot. LSU transfer CJ Daniels will spend his first game at Miami in the torture chamber of Notre Dame’s dominant secondary.

Cornerback Leonard Moore allowed just 16 of his 42 single-coverage targets to be caught last year in his freshman season, limiting opposing QBs to a 59.9 passer rating over those throws. His 88.7 overall grade at Pro Football Focus ranked seventh in the nation.

Things won’t get any easier for Daniels against Notre Dame’s other boundary corner, Christian Gray. Gray memorably picked off Penn State’s Drew Allar to put his team in position to win the Orange Bowl last year.
