- HBO’s Game of Thrones is set to return April 14th
- When we last let off, Viserion had perished at the hands of the Night King, turning him into an Ice Dragon
- Who will be the one to end the threat of the Ice Dragon? Are Rhaegal and Drogon safe?
The world is awaiting the return of Game of Thrones, and with it, the Dragons.
When we left off, Daenerys saw one of her children fall to the Night King. She watched him transform Viserion into the formidable Ice Dragon.
With this standing as the biggest threat to our heroes, who will be responsible for defeating the Ice Dragon?
Who Will Kill the Ice Dragon?

Can Prophecies Tell Us Anything About Dragons?
Examining the prophecies surrounding Dany, we can eliminate her from the list.
Her prophecies revolve around interactions with people. The easiest path to go down would be to concentrate on any mentioning a Targaryen mother and her children.

There aren’t any of those, so she looks unlikely.
Who is in Possession of Valyrian Steel?
This helps narrow things down, as it’s the easiest way to kill a White Walker, Wight or, we assume, an Ice Dragon.
First of all, there’s heavy favorite Jon Snow who owns Longclaw, and Jorah Mormont looks to be carrying Heartsbane. There’s also Oathkeeper with Brienne of Tarth and Widow’s Wail with Jamie Lannister.

This would be a massive deviation from Jorah, Brienne, or Jamie’s paths. The recent trailer does put them in the right place at the right time, but the only way one of those three does the deed is if Jorah saves Dany.
Alternative Ways to Take Down a Dragon
There is one other thing that works against the Night King’s army: Obsidion (Dragonglass).
While Sam Tarly seems unlikely to do the deed at +2000, he got our heroes heading in the right direction.

The warriors will be equipped with dragonglass, but again, the storyline likely won’t lead them there. Grey Worm is intriguing at +800, but his heroics will likely be re-directed to Missandei and dragon-less.

The favorites to Take Down Viserion
After sorting through everything, Jon remains our favorite. But he also offers the worst value.
If you want to look in a different direction, consider Rhadegal, Drogon, or the both option. Their fire is the wild card, as it works against Wights but what about a White Walker or Ice Dragon? We love Sam and his +2000, but his involvement likely stops at the dragonglass revelation.
Will Both Living Dragons Die?
Will Both Living Dragons Die in the Final Season of GoT? | Odds |
---|---|
Yes | +750 |
No | -2250 |
The odds are heavily in favor of “No” here, and there’s not a lot of evidence pointing in the other direction.
It’s tough to find any prophecies that deal with this, and there’s no history to really go on.
The easiest strategy is to consider the dragons’ names and their history. Rhaegal was named for Rhaegar Targaryen. He died at the hands of Robert Baratheon. Drogon was named for Khal Drogo, whom Daenerys technically killed.
If both names related back to the Targaryens, we’d entertain yes. But they don’t, which makes it difficult to tie their fates to anything.
The answer is no, and it’s practically un-bettable.
