Only four teams remain as the 2020 League of Legends World Championship enters the semifinals. The first semifinal features G2 and DAMWON who 3-0’d their quarterfinal opponents and are the last hopes for Europe and Korea respectively. In the other semi, Top Esports will try to prove they’re deserving of China’s #1 seed as they take on their fellow LPL squad, Suning.

Something’s Gotta Give For G2 Esports

G2 and DAMWON are both coming off of 3-0 sweeps in the quarterfinals and will butt heads for a spot in the grand finale. For G2 Esports, they’ve built up a very impressive resume against Korean teams. At last year’s Worlds, G2 took down SKT and DAMWON Gaming to secure their place in the finals.

At Worlds 2020, they already took down Gen G. without much trouble and could be primed for another upset. G2 is once again listed as the underdog and DAMWON have been one of the favorites to win it all dating back to before the tournament started.

DAMWON has been cruising through Worlds. They won their group with a 5-1 record before dismantling DragonX in the quarterfinals. Although G2 has had notable success against teams from Korea, they may never have faced a team playing as well as DAMWON is right now. DAMWON has evolved and improved drastically from a year ago when they lost to G2.

There might not be a team that’s better at snowballing a lead once they get ahead. If DAMWON can control Jankos and win the early game, G2 will struggle to find openings to claw back.

Even though DAMWON should probably win on paper,  Europe has had a team make finals in back-to-back years for a reason. They somehow find a way to dramatically win best of fives and at +175, it’s worth it to bet on G2 pulling off the upset.

Pick: G2 Esports (+175)

China’s Top Team

The lone upset in the quarterfinals was Suning taking down China’s #2 seed JD Gaming 3-1. Suning was China’s #3 seed, but despite that, they looked quite confident and decisively advanced to the semifinals. JD Gaming looked out of sorts for most of the tournament, so it’s difficult to assess how strong Suning is as they enter into a very difficult matchup with the top team out of China.

Their opponents, Top Esports, were also viewed as tournament favorites. After the group stage, there was no reason to doubt them. Following the quarterfinals, Fnatic made Top Esports bleed their own blood, and all of a sudden they looked beatable.

With that being said, Fnatic had to really work to pick up their 2-0 lead meanwhile Top Esports’ wins were way more controlled. For a while, it looked like Top might get swept but instead, they pulled off the first reverse sweep in the history of Worlds.

Despite being one game away from elimination, it’s still hard to bet against Top Esports. The veteran experience of Karsa and JackeyLove was evident as there was no panic on the team after they dropped the opening two games to Fnatic. They have players who have already been under the stress of the big stage, and pulling off a do-or-die win in game 5 is a huge building block for the team.

Suning has skills, and even though they pushed around JD Gaming, Top Esports should still be a class ahead of them. Don’t stress over their close call in quarters, they should be just fine against Suning.

Pick: Top Esports (-188)
