The World Champs

DWG KIA has been the dominant team in the LCK dating back to 2020. Quite simply, they were (and still might be) the best team in the world. When the 2021 LCK Spring Season started, the roster looked a tiny bit different, but their performance remained the same.

To be fair, they might have gotten even stronger. DWG KIA cruised through the regular season with a 16-2 match record and a 33-10 game score. In a league as strong as the LCK, it’s rare to see a team rack up wins as consistently as DWG KIA. They also cleaned out the end of season rewards. DWG’s jungler ‘Canyon’ was named the MVP of the Spring Split, and ‘Khan’, ‘Canyon’, and ‘Showmaker’ all made the LCK All-Pro Team.

Awards wouldn’t have meant much if their playoff run ended abruptly but, so far they’ve continued that regular-season dominance. In the semifinals against Hanwha Life Esports, DWG KIA won three straight and quickly qualified for the final. Although the series was a sweep, DWG KIA found themselves in a couple of deficits.

Their superior macro and late-game decision making keeps them alive in any game and is what makes them so dangerous. Their ability to set up for objectives and then execute team fights is seriously impressive and will make it hard for Gen.G to win three games against them.

DWG KIA vs Gen.G Best Bet

Entering the other semifinal, despite Gen.G being favored in the odds, a lot of the hype was behind T1. They had pieced together a winning streak to close out the regular season, and that included a victory over Gen.G. In the playoffs, that hype train was quickly halted. Whether it was bizarre team compositions or lack of execution from T1, the bottom line was that Gen.G won 3-0.

Gen.G finished second in the LCK regular season with a 13-5 match record. They were one of only two teams to hand DWG KIA a loss, and now they get another chance to do so in the final. The most impressive part of their semifinal win was that they seemed to have a clear understanding of what to do and when. Against T1’s poke composition, the only answer was flanking and hard engages, which BDD was able to pull off in game 3.

As impressive as the sweep was, it will be even harder to execute a game plan against DWG KIA. I’m trying not to write off Gen.G, but DWG KIA has been running the show in the LCK since 2020 Summer. Gen.G will be a tough test, and I see them taking a game or two. At the end of the day, I have to side with the favorites in DWG KIA by a score of 3-1.

Pick: DWG KIA -1.5 (-154), O 3.5 (-313)
