One year after coming oh-so-close to tasting victory at the Sony Open, Brendan Steele is yet again in the driver’s seat to earn a victory. Steele shot a blistering nine-under, 61 on moving day to jump into sole possession of the lead despite not being one of the favorites to begin the week. He’s out to avenge last year’s loss, where he couldn’t convert the 54-hole lead before losing in a playoff to Cameron Smith.

One of our under the radar picks to consider this week was Joaquin Niemann after he lost in a playoff last Sunday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and he has not disappointed. He’s in a tie for second with Kevin Na, just two strokes behind Steele.

Brendan Steele Out To Avenge 2020 Loss

Without a doubt Brendan Steele should’ve won this golf tournament last year, as he held a three shot edge entering the final round. It feels like deja vu all over again as he shot a career low round of 61 on moving day to jump out in front of the pack at the Sony Open.

Steele is not exactly known as a closer on the PGA Tour, though he does have three titles to his credit, the last being the Safeway Open in 2017. Just because he has a two shot edge does not mean this tournament is over by any means, as last year proved. His +340 odds aren’t palpable enough to wager on considering he rarely turns leads into victories.
