Following a week hiatus while the Presidents Cup was being contested, the PGA Tour is back for its second full-field tournament for the 2022-23 wraparound season. The Sanderson Farms Championship doesn’t have a particularly great turnout, with defending champion Sam Burns the lone top-35 golfer teeing it up.

With the field not comprised of many top-tier players, it allows plenty of opportunities for sleepers and longshots to make some noise to in the early going of the campaign.

The forecast calls for it to be sunny all day. Temperatures will be mid 50’s for those teeing it up first, hitting mid 70’s for those playing in the afternoon. The wind will be gusting between ten miles per hour early in the morning, reaching 17 miles per hour for those starting in the afternoon.

A benefit for those teeing it up in the morning is the exact same as it is every week – less-bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up.

Russell Henley a Fast Starter

Russell Henley (12:17pm tee time) is an extremely fast starter, as he ranked fourth best on Thursday’s last season. Of those competing this week, he’s tops in that department. In his last four tournaments to conclude last season, each opening round was a score in the 60’s.

PGA Tour First Round Scoring Average Leaders Last Season

Golfer Average Score Odds
4. Russell Henley 68.38 +4000
14. Wyndham Clark 69.21 +6500
16. Denny McCarthy 69.25 +3500
17. Sam Burns 69.26 +2800
23. Patton Kizzire 69.32 +13000
26. Lee Hodges 69.43 +9000
27. Rory Sabbatini 69.47 +9000
30. Joel Dahmen 69.52 +13000
35. Davis Riley 69.57 +5000
37. Aaron Rai 69.63 +6000

In two of those four starts, Henley ended up with solid T-5th and T-10th finishes. In his last twelve rounds, nobody is better than Henley in strokes gained: tee-to-green, and ball striking.

Pick: Russell Henley (+4000)

Emiliano Grillo Playing Solidly

Emiliano Grillo (12:39pm) ended last campaign with a pair of runner-up results in his last five tournaments, at the John Deere Classic and 3M Open. He then started off the 2022-23 season with a very reasonable T-25th at the Fortinet Championship.

Even though his first round scoring average wasn’t anything to write home about for the entirety of the 2021-22 season, those last five events told a different story. In four instances, he shot a 67 or a 68. He then followed that up with a 67 in his first tourney this season.

Emiliano Grillo Strokes Gained Ranks Last 24 Rounds

Off-The-Tee Total Tee-To-Green Ball Striking Short Game Putting
1 2 3 5 15 18

In Grillo’s last four Thursday’s, he’s tops in total strokes gained, and ninth tee-to-green.

Pick: Emiliano Grillo (+5000)

Sepp Straka Coming Off Great Playoffs

Sepp Straka (7:33am) won for the first time on the PGA Tour at this year’s Honda Classic. He very nearly did it again at the RBC Heritage, but then he had a prolonged slump that saw him miss six straight cuts.

As soon as the FedEx Cup Playoffs came around, however, he heated up in a huge way. At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he lost a heartbreaking playoff, then went T-28th, T-6th.

Sepp Straka’s Strokes Gained Ranks Last Twelve Rounds

Total Tee-To-Green Ball Striking Approach Short Game Putting
3 5 5 8 27 29

At +6000, Straka is most certainly a solid dark-horse candidate to jump in front of the pack after day one. He has an early tee time, which should aid in his attempt, with the greens pristine.

Pick: Sepp Straka (+6000)
