  • Saturday’s Belmont Stakes is the last of this year’s Triple Crown races
  • The Belmont has produced large payouts routinely over the last couple of decades
  • What longshots should we consider carefully in New York?

Medina Spirit paid $26.20 for a two dollar wager at this year’s Kentucky Derby. If you are convinced he was on performance enhancers, second place finisher Mandaloun went off at +2700. The Preakness Stakes was won by Rombauer, rewarding backers with a $25.60 payout. Why shouldn’t we get a juicy price at the Belmont Stakes?

While last year’s Belmont, run as the first of the Triple Crown races because of COVID-19, was won by favorite Tiz the Law, that has not been the norm. Big prices regularly cash in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

What longshots should you pay close attention to this year in the Big Apple? Let’s look at a few of the options and debate their merits.

2021 Belmont Stakes Odds

Horse Odds
Essential Quality +200
Rombauer +300
Hot Rod Charlie +350
Rock Your World +450
Known Agenda +600
Bourbonic +1500
Overtook +2000
France Go De Ina +3000

Odds as of June 3 at TVG

Over the last 21 runnings of the Belmont there have been six winners at +200 or less and 11 that paid better than +1000. In fact, four times the winner has been +2000 or more. That neither guarantees a short price nor a big one, but clearly the door is open to both.

There are only three seriously large prices this year at the Belmont Stakes, though any time you can quintuple your cash that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Horse racing sites offer you all sorts of ways to play, and a chance to maximize your betting value.

Will any of the longshots in this field take well to the marathon mile-and-a-half challenge? NBC will have the answer a little bit before 7:00 pm EST on Saturday.

Known Agenda

Yes, he is not an enormous price. That said, he was less than +1000 at the Kentucky Derby when he had 18 opponents and now is a terrific value against less than half that many rivals.

You have to excuse the Run for the Roses. He drew the extreme inside post, didn’t get out great, and at that point was more or less done because he would need to find a way around most of the field. If he runs like he did in the Florida Derby he’ll be a factor at the Belmont Stakes.

The son of Belmont winner Curlin, Known Agenda should like the extra distance. He is owned by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Vinnie Viola’s St. Elias Stable, trained by Todd Pletcher, and ridden by Irad Ortiz. Those are very strong connections.

Bourbonic

Also conditioned by Pletcher, Bourbonic has three wins and they have all taken place in New York. At more than +7000 he won the Wood Memorial.

In the Kentucky Derby Bourbonic ran 13th. He does his best running late, and a long stretch drive in a 12 furlong race perhaps creates opportunity. He needs a sharp pace to set him up.

Overtook

Did someone say Pletcher? A three-time winner of the Belmont, he is taking three shots this year. Overtook has just one career victory but hit the board in February’s Withers Stakes and last month’s Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont.

St. Elias along with two other powerful ownership groups have a piece of the $1 million horse. Like Known Agenda, his father is Curlin. What we have seen on the track thus far from Overtook isn’t good enough, but there is pedigree and a belief he is a late developer.

France Go de Ina

Bred in Kentucky, France Go de Ina ran his first three races in Japan, winning twice. In March he ran sixth in Dubai, and then finished seventh in May’s Preakness Stakes.

YouTube video

Maybe he will really like a longer distance? At a big price, you might consider a place or show wager and still get value if he runs big. For what it is worth, Curlin is one of his grandfathers.

Longshot Selection

Known Agenda is not +2000 or some huge number. That said, he is a very logical contender and the number is more than reasonable. If he had drawn any position besides the rail he would have been +600 or so in the Derby.

Had he then run his typical race, he would have hit the board. Really, Known Agenda looks a lot like Hot Rod Charlie. He’s a pro who gives you his all and is sitting on a big race. Hot Rod Charlie had things go his was in Kentucky. Known Agenda didn’t and that’s why the price is square.

Pick: Known Agenda (+600)
