The Chicago White Sox will cruise into this year’s playoffs, but they might want to crank up the intensity down the stretch and end the season with some forward momentum.
Chicago is 7-9 in its last 16 games, after suffering a 4-3 loss to Detroit on Monday. The two clubs will play Game 2 of their three-game set on Tuesday afternoon, and despite their shaky September play, the White Sox are once again favored.

Probable Pitchers
Dallas Keuchel will take the ball for the White Sox, looking to salvage a truly disappointing season. The 33-year-old has a 5.23 ERA, the second highest of his career, and a 1.47 WHIP, which is his highest since his rookie campaign.
He’s allowed at least five runs in four of his past five starts, posting just as many walks (11) as strikeouts. Even in his last outing, which he managed to hold the LA Angels to only two runs, he still surrendered 11 baserunners over 6 innings, including five walks. Opposing batters are hitting .278 against him in 2021, with a .466 slugging percentage and an .811 OPS.
Michael Kopech enters for the Sox as the game goes to the seventh.

In two starts against Detroit this season, Keuchel is 0-1, surrendering nine runs in 10 innings of work, including two homers.
Keuchel vs Alexander
8-9 | Record | 2-3 |
5.23 | ERA | 4.13 |
1.47 | WHIP | 1.26 |
.278 | OBA | .256 |
1.6 | SO/W Ratio | 3.3 |
The Tigers will counter with lefty Tyler Alexander, who’ll make his 13th start of the season. The 27-year-old has split his time between the starting rotation and bullpen this season, posting mixed results in his last two starts.
Last time out, he gave up five hits and four runs to the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays in a 5-2 defeat, but the start prior he limited the same Rays club to a single run in a 10-4 victory.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
White Sox Batters | Batting Average vs Alexander | Tigers Batters | Batting Average vs Keuchel |
---|---|---|---|
Jose Abreu | .471 | Akil Baddoo | .000 |
Tim Anderson | .357 | Miguel Cabrera | .227 |
Zack Collins | .400 | Jeimer Candelario | .364 |
Leury Garcia | .250 | Willi Castro | .667 |
Brian Goodwin | .000 | Niko Goodrum | .333 |
Yasmani Grandal | .333 | Robbie Grossman | .222 |
Eloy Jimenez | .333 | Victor Reyes | .333 |
Yoan Moncada | .308 | Jonathan Schoop | .389 |
He’s yet to make a start this season against Chicago, but has faced them five times in relief. Alexander has racked up a 1-1 record, with a 3.38 ERA versus the White Sox, issuing eight hits and three runs over 8 innings.
White Sox vs Tigers Pick
The White Sox offense has cooled down recently, scoring three or fewer runs in nine of their past 16 games, but they do have a favorable matchup against Alexander. Chicago owns a higher batting average, slugging percentage and OPS versus lefties than righties, and if Alexander leaves early, the White Sox could find even more success against Detroit’s 23rd ranked bullpen.
The Tigers meanwhile, don’t feature a lineup to fear, but the way Keuchel is pitching, any MLB team can have success against him. In the two starts he’s made against Detroit in 2021, the game totals have been 17 and 16. His command had abandoned him, and when that happens soft tossing pitchers will struggle to keep opposing lineups in check.
Pick: Over 9.5 (-105)
