Dallas Keuchel will take the ball for the White Sox, looking to salvage a truly disappointing season. The 33-year-old has a 5.23 ERA, the second highest of his career, and a 1.47 WHIP, which is his highest since his rookie campaign.

He’s allowed at least five runs in four of his past five starts, posting just as many walks (11) as strikeouts. Even in his last outing, which he managed to hold the LA Angels to only two runs, he still surrendered 11 baserunners over 6 innings, including five walks. Opposing batters are hitting .278 against him in 2021, with a .466 slugging percentage and an .811 OPS.

The Tigers will counter with lefty Tyler Alexander, who’ll make his 13th start of the season. The 27-year-old has split his time between the starting rotation and bullpen this season, posting mixed results in his last two starts.

Last time out, he gave up five hits and four runs to the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays in a 5-2 defeat, but the start prior he limited the same Rays club to a single run in a 10-4 victory.

He’s yet to make a start this season against Chicago, but has faced them five times in relief. Alexander has racked up a 1-1 record, with a 3.38 ERA versus the White Sox, issuing eight hits and three runs over 8 innings.

The White Sox offense has cooled down recently, scoring three or fewer runs in nine of their past 16 games, but they do have a favorable matchup against Alexander. Chicago owns a higher batting average, slugging percentage and OPS versus lefties than righties, and if Alexander leaves early, the White Sox could find even more success against Detroit’s 23rd ranked bullpen.
