  • The Los Angeles Angels are -250 road favorites over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, October 5
  • Entering play Tuesday, the Angels were 6-1 straight up in the last seven against the Athletics and 5-1 SU in the past six played at Oakland
  • See analysis of the Angels vs Athletics picks and odds in the following story

The Los Angeles Angels (73-87, 33-46 away) didn’t beat a lot of teams during a dismal 2022, but they did beat the Oakland Athletics (58-102, 27-57 home) like a drum.

LA’s American League squad will be wrapping up a three-game season-ending series at Oakland on Wednesday. The Angels were taking the diamond on Tuesday winners of seven of the last eight straight up from the Athletics and also SU victors in six out of seven played between the two teams at Oakland.

They’ll be sending staff ace Shohei Ohtani to the mound for the season finale. Oddsmakers are strongly backing the Angels as -250 road favorites. Oakland’s 27 SU home victories are the fewest of any American League team.

First pitch at Oakland Coliseum goes at 4:00pm ET on Wednesday, October 5. The weather forecast is calling for cloudy skies with 7 mph wind and a temperature of 75 degrees.

The MLB public betting splits are decidedly split on this game in all aspects except the moneyline. They’re all over the Angels in that wager. LA is drawing 96% of moneyline handle and 92% of bets. As for the runline, 76% of bets are with the Angels. However, 69% of the handle is wagered on the Athletics. Likewise public betting on the total is also of two minds. The over is garnering 87% of handle. Bets, though, are 52% with the under.

Los Angeles Angels vs Oakland Probable Pitchers

In Monday’s MLB lineups, the Angels are going to the diamond confidently behind Ohtani, an outside contender in the AL Cy Young Award odds. He’s showing career bests this season for wins (15), ERA (2.35), games started (27), innings pitched (161), strikeouts (213) and WHIP (1.03).

Ohtani is in the top 6% of MLB hurlers in strikeout percentage (33.1). His 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings lead all AL pitchers.

The righty has won his last four starts and is 5-0 through his past six trips to the mound. Ohtani was 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA in September.

In his previous start on Sept. 29, Ohtani worked eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball and got the win in a 4-2 verdict over the Athletics. He’s 2-1 with a 0.92 ERA against Oakland this season and 4-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 9 career starts against the Athletics.

Ohtani vs Waldichuk Stats

Shohei Ohtani
VS
Ken Waldichuk
15-8 Record 1-2
2.35 ERA 6.18
2.72 xERA 5.04
1.03 WHIP 1.37
4.95 SO/W Ratio 3.22

Athletics rookie left-hander Ken Waldichuk will be making his seventh MLB start. Recalled to begin the month of September, Waldichuk can say that he played a role in the NL East pennant race. He lost 7-3 to the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 7 and beat the New York Mets 10-4 on Sept. 24. The latter effort was the first victory of Waldichuk’s big-league career.

He’s allowed at least three earned runs in four of his six MLB starts. As well, Waldichuk has served up five home runs over 27.2 innings on the bump. That works out to 1.6 homers per nine innings. He’s walked nine batters against 29 strikeouts, but four of those free passes were issued during his 4.2 innings in the show.

Waldichuk will be facing the Angels for the first time as a big-league pitcher. In fact, only three of his six MLB starts have come against AL clubs.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Athletics Batters Batting Average vs Elder Angels Batters Batting Average vs Waldichuk
Conner Capel .333 Jo Adell .000
Dermis Garcia .333 William Contreras .000
Vimael Machin .429 Shohei Ohtani .000
Sean Murphy .154 Anthony Rendon .000
Chad Pinder .200 Mike Trout .000

Athletics second baseman Vimael Machin is .(3-for-7) 429 when facing Ohtani. However, he’s been placed on the paternity list after returning home to Puerto Rico to be with his wife for the birth of their son. Both Conner Capel and Dermis Garcia are 1-for-3 (.333). Sean Murphy is only batting .154 but has a homer and three RBI.

No Angels batter has ever faced Waldichuk in an MLB game.

Angels vs Athletics Prediction

If Yankees slugger Aaron Judge wasn’t about to break the AL home run record, a solid case could be made for Ohtani in the AL MVP odds. The likes of his ilk haven’t been seen in MLB since the early days of Babe Ruth. Besides his pitching exploits, Ohtani is also batting .275 with 34 homers, 95 RBI and an OPS of .882.

The Athletics have no answers for the man the Angels call Showtime, as a pitcher or a hitter.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels ML (-250)
