Wednesday will be the last meeting of the 2022 season between the American League-best Houston Astros (92-50, 45-28 away) and the Detroit Tigers (54-88, 30-42 home) as they wrap up a three-game set at Comerica Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM ET.
The always reliable Cristian Javier gets the call for Houston, while the Tigers counter with rookie Joey Wentz.

The Astros are heavily favored on the moneyline at -267 odds. They’ve also won six in a row against the Tigers, but have covered the -1.5 runline in just three of those contests.

Houston vs Detroit Probable Pitchers
Javier has been an important piece of Houston’s success on the mound this year. The righty owns a 8-9 record and 3.01 ERA in 26 appearances, with 21 starts. What jumps off the page most with him is the strikeout numbers. Javier has sat down 165 batters in just 125.2 innings.

Although he’s walked 46 during that span, the 25-year-old still manages to be effective almost every time he takes the mound. Last time out, Javier tossed 5.1 innings vs. Texas and allowed just one earned run on four hits. This will be his first start against Detroit, but he’s posted a 1.93 ERA in two previous relief outings.
Javier vs Wentz
8-9 | Record | 1-1 |
3.01 | ERA | 4.05 |
125.2 | Innings Pitched | 13.1 |
165 | Strikeouts | 10 |
46 | BB | 3 |
Wentz made his big league debut back in May but was quickly sent back down to the minors. Then once the rosters expanded in September, the southpaw got another chance in Detroit’s MLB lineup. He actually looked fantastic in his first start on September 9th, limiting the Royals to just two hits and no runs across 6.2 quality innings.

It’s tough to make much of his stats given the limited amount of time at the MLB level, but he’s 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three starts, striking out 10 and walking three. He’s never faced the Astros and it will be a tough task ahead given the electric bats from top to bottom in this lineup.
Astros Are Cruising
Surprise surprise, the ‘Stros are dominating in 2022. Dusty Baker’s squad is 92-50 at the moment and essentially a lock for the best record in the AL. Their World Series odds also sit at +385, second-best behind only the Dodgers who are at +315.

Heading into Wednesday’s rubber match, Houston has won five of their last six and previously took three out of four from the Angels. From their offense to the pitching staff, they’ve been nothing short of spectacular. Yordan Alvarez is a big reason the Astros swing it so well too, hitting .293 with 32 bombs.
Can Tigers End Losing Skid?
Not only have Detroit lost three in a row, but they’re on a brutal cold streak against Houston and will be looking to end it in the finale. It will be very difficult though against Javier, one of their top arms.

Unfortunately, it’s another disappointing campaign for the Tigers, who are one of the worst offensive teams in the Majors. Their staff isn’t much better, either. But if Wentz can replicate his last start here, they’ll have a fighting chance of avoiding the sweep.

Astros vs Tigers Pick
I personally think the Astros will give Wentz a rude awakening on Wednesday and score no shortage of runs. Plus, Javier is historically good against Detroit. With the moneyline steep, take Houston to cover.
