Oakland vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers

Despite their standing atop the division, the Pirates are getting zero love in the World Series odds. They currently boast a +20000 price tag to win it all, which is shorter than only six other teams.

They’ll give the ball to Roansy Contreras on Wednesday, as he looks to bounce back from a dreadful outing. Contreras surrendered seven hits and five runs to the struggling Cardinals on Friday, and was taken deep twice.

Control and the long ball have been the big reasons for his struggles lately, as he’s winless in his past six starts. He’s coughed up seven home runs during that stretch, while averaging a base on balls nearly every two innings.

Fortunately for him, the Oakland regulars in MLB starting lineups represent one of the most favorable matchups a pitcher can have – more on that later.

Harris vs Contreras Stats

The A’s will counter with rookie Hogan Harris. On the surface, his numbers look terrible, but that’s being heavily influenced by one bad outing. Harris yielded six hits, six runs and five walks in just one-third of an inning back in April in his MLB debut. He was sent back down to the minors afterwards, and has looked like a different pitcher since he’s returned.

In 10 innings of relief work since being recalled, split over two outings, he’s allowed only two runs while striking out 10. He held the mighty Astros to a single hit over 5 innings two weeks ago, and then last week limited the Marlins to two runs and five hits over 5 innings.

He’s posted a 3.77 ERA in eight starts for AAA Las Vegas, but will have his hands full with the Pirates lineup. Pittsburgh is slashing .288/.364/.419 over the last week, averaging five runs per game.

That’s helped Pittsburgh outscore the opposition 29-15 during their last six games ahead of Tuesday night’s tilt. They don’t have a single dominant hitter in their lineup, but it’s still well balanced unit that sees contributions come from everywhere.

Oakland on the other hand, ranks dead last in nearly every offensive category. No team scores fewer runs per game, or owns a lower batting average, slugging percentage or OPS. Prior to Tuesday’s 11 run outburst, they’d scored three runs or less in 18 of their past 22 contests.
