Over the last decade the NFL has made a huge footprint across the pond. MLB is trying to do the same. For just the second time ever, games are being held in London, England this weekend, with the Cubs (37-38) and Cardinals (31-45) having the honor of playing on European soil.

Chicago took the opening game of the 2023 London Series on Saturday in convincing fashion, and online sportsbooks are siding with them again on Sunday morning in the MLB odds.

Chicago vs St. Louis Probable Pitchers

Chicago is a heavy favorite for multiple reasons on Sunday. For starters, they’re playing lights out baseball at the moment. The Cubs enter play with nine wins in their last 10 outings. Also working heavily in their favor is the massive advantage they have on the mound.

Chicago will give the ball to Marcus Stroman, who’s earning serious consideration in the NL CY Young odds. Stroman checks in with the sixth shortest price to win the award, and is fresh off of seven shutout innings against Pittsburgh.

The 32-year-old is on pace to set career highs in virtually every key statistical category, and owns a tidy 1.40 ERA in four June starts. He’s yielded two or fewer runs in seven straight outings, and in all but two of his 16 starts this season.

That includes six innings of two-run ball in his lone appearance versus St. Louis this year, in a game he struck out six and walked just one.

Enemy hitters are batting a measly .191 against Stroman in 2023, with a paltry .271 slugging percentage and .536 OPS.

Stroman vs Liberatore Stats

Marcus Stroman
VS
Matthew Liberatore
9-4 Record 1-2
2.28 ERA 6.12
1.04 WHIP 1.56
.191 OBA .276
2.4 SO/W Ratio 1.5

The Cardinals will counter with Matthew Liberatore and they can’t be feeling good about it. The lefty has been a punching bag for opposing batters this season, surrendering a slash line of .276/.376/.439. Believe it or not, that’s actually a lower mark than he yielded in 2022, which tells you everything you need to know about his MLB trajectory.

Liberatore is fresh off coughing up five runs to the Mets, which marks the second time in three outings he’s allowed at least that many runners to cross the plate. He’s got minimal history against the Chicago regulars in the MLB starting lineups, but those he has faced have gotten the upper hand.

Current Cubs hitters are batting .308 off Liberatore over 13 at-bats, with a .615 slugging percentage and a 1.015 OPS.

Cubs vs Cardinals Predictions

Also working against Liberatore is the fact that Chicago’s lineup is red-hot right now. They’ve plated 17 runs in their last two games, including nine in the series opener in London. The Cubs are averaging 7.3 runs per outing over their last 10 games, ranking sixth in MLB in slugging over that stretch, and fourth in wOBA.

Chicago has six batters hitting over .300 over their last 10 games, including Ian Happ who stole the show on Saturday. Happ belted two homers versus the Cardinals in Chicago’s 9-1 win, and has a home run in two career at-bats against Liberatore.

After being a colossal disappointment for the bulk of the season to date, St. Louis had been on a bit of run earlier this week. They ripped off four straight wins for the first time in over a month, but have gone quiet at the plate in back-to-back outings.

Cubs vs Cardinals 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
June 24 Cubs Cardinals CHC, 9-1
May 10 Cardinals Cubs CHC, 10-4
May 9 Cardinals Cubs STL, 6-4
May 8 Cardinals Cubs STL, 3-1

They’ve dropped each of those two games, scoring only a single run in the process. The Cards managed just six hits versus Justin Steele and the Cubs bullpen on Sunday, striking out nine times and finishing 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

You’d think a lineup led by Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado would have no issue cashing in runners, but that hasn’t been the case. St. Louis is batting just .253 with runners on base this season, and that isn’t likely to improve on Sunday given Stroman’s pristine form.

Picks: Chicago Cubs Moneyline (-135), Under 12 (-120)
