The Chicago Cubs (41-47, 20-25 away) will be looking to win just their second game ever at Yankee Stadium on Sunday in the series finale against the New York Yankees (49-41, 28-22 home). The first pitch is set for 1:35 PM ET. The Bronx Bombers bounced back on Saturday to take Game 2 of the series, winning 6-3 behind a solid outing from Gerrit Cole.

For the rubber match, The Cubbies send Kyle Hendricks to the hill. The Yanks counter with Domingo German, who tossed a perfect game on June 28th.

Chicago vs New York Probable Pitchers

Despite lacking much juice on his fastball these days, Hendricks is having a solid campaign. He’s 3-3 with a 2.64 ERA in eight starts, striking out 27 in 47.2 innings while walking only 10. The veteran has fantastic command and induces a lot of weak contact.

Every single outing for Hendricks seems to be quality. He went six innings against the Brewers on July 4th, allowing a mere one run on four hits. Before that? Seven innings of three-run baseball versus the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s only faced the Yankees once before, throwing 5.1 shutout innings.

Hendricks vs German Stats

Kyle Hendricks
VS
Domingo German
3-3 Record 5-5
2.64 ERA 4.52
47.2 Innings Pitched 85.2
27 Strikeouts 83
10 Walks 25

Yes, German tossed a perfect game which is absolutely historic, but as a whole, it hasn’t been a great year for the Dominican. He’s made 16 starts, compiling a 4.52 ERA and 5-5 record. The long ball is an issue for German, giving up 15 home runs.

That being said, he’s looked better as of late. German followed up the perfect game with a respectable outing against the Orioles, allowing two earned on nine hits for a no-decision. He’s never faced the Cubs before.

Can Cubs’ Bats Come Out to Play?

Chicago scored just three runs in the opener but still grabbed the win and then scored another three on Saturday, although it wasn’t enough for another victory. In fact, the Cubbies only had five hits in the afternoon matchup. Cole essentially dominated them.

Drew Smyly did his best to keep his team in the game, too. However, it just wasn’t enough due to the lack of offense. Given German’s inconsistency, this is a good opportunity for Chicago to bounce back.

Stanton Breaking Out?

With Aaron Judge still injured, it’s no secret that Giancarlo Stanton must step up for the Yankees. Needless to say, he did just that on Saturday, smacking a moonshot HR that traveled 447 feet before cranking a second bomb of the afternoon. He accounted for three of New York’s six runs.

Gleyber Torres also had a pair of hits, while Harrison Bader had a big two-RBI double. On the mound, Cole twirled a gem. Hendricks isn’t an easy guy to square up, but the Yanks need to try and carry that momentum at the plate over into Sunday. Without Judge, others have to step up. It’s that simple.

Cubs vs Yankees Predictions

There’s one glaring stat that stands out to me here. Hendrick owns a 1.71 ERA on the road and a 1.42 ERA in day games. That’s enough for me to take the Cubbies.

Pick: Cubs Moneyline (+125)
