Hard to believe, but the Detroit Tigers (7-9, 4-3 home) currently own the longest active winning streak in the American League. The Tigers have reeled off five consecutive victories after starting the season 2-9, and will look to continue their impressive play on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians (9-9, 7-5 away).
Online sportsbooks are expecting a swift end to Detroit’s run in the MLB odds though, as they’ve pegged Cleveland as the road chalk for this matchup.

Cleveland vs Detroit Probable Pitchers
Cleveland will give the ball to Cal Quantrill on Wednesday, who’s off to a shaky start. The right-hander has coughed up 11 runs in 15.2 innings of work, yielding 21 hits and another five walks.
Quantrill has never been a big strikeout producer, but his K-rate this year is the lowest it’s ever been. That number currently sits at 5.2 per 9 innings, a full strikeout lower than in 2022.
Life won’t get any easier on Wednesday, as Tigers batters have hit Quantrill hard over the course of his career. Current Detroit players are hitting .306 off the righty over 72 at-bats, with a .708 OPS.
Quantrill vs Turnbull Stats
0-1 | Record | 1-2 |
5.74 | ERA | 9.00 |
1.66 | WHIP | 1.92 |
.300 | OBA | .345 |
1.8 | SO/W Ratio | 1.7 |
The Tigers will counter with Spencer Turnbull, who’s off to an even worse start than Quantrill. Turnbull has allowed 19 hits and 13 runs over 13 innings, surrendering at least five runs in two of his three starts.
He is coming off a solid outing against the Blue Jays on the road however, and has performed decently against Cleveland in the past. He’s held Guardians hitters to a .244 average and .366 slugging percentage over 41 at-bats.
Guardians vs Tigers Betting Trends
Detroit swept Tuesday’s double-header versus Cleveland, playing the first game in front of just over 100 fans. Cold, rainy temperatures kept the attendance to a bare minimum, and the weather played a part in two low scoring games.

The two teams managed to produce just eight runs total over the two contests, with the Tigers winning 4-3 and 1-0. More favorable weather conditions and juicy matchups for both lineups should lead to more scoring on Wednesday, especially from the Guardians.
Detroit has seen 56% of its first 16 contests eclipse the total, while the over is 9-8-1 in Cleveland’s 18 outings. Neither team is loaded with offensive talent in the MLB lineups, but the poor form of both starters, and the underwhelming Tigers bullpen brings over 8.5 runs into play.
Detroit relievers have a 5.46 ERA so far, the sixth worst mark in MLB. They also have a dismal 65.3% strand rate, which is worse than all but four teams.
Guardians vs Tigers Predictions
The Tigers five-game winning streak is a nice story, but there’s some smoke and mirrors to it as well. Three of the five wins have come on walk-off hits, while another was a 1-0 win thanks to eight shutout innings from Eduardo Rodriguez.
Needless to say, Detroit’s not getting eight shutout innings from Turnball on Wednesday, which is going to put a lot more stress on their bullpen.
Guardians vs Tigers 2023 H2H Results
Date | Away Team | Home Team | Result |
---|---|---|---|
April 18th | Guardians | Tigers | DET, 1-0 |
April 18th | Guardians | Tigers | DET, 4-3 |
Offensively, the Tigers can expect some regression as walk-off hits are not a common occurrence. The Tigers have hit the third fewest home runs in MLB (10) and own the second worst batting average in the AL (.208). Even if their outlook is favorable on Wednesday, they’ll struggle to keep pace with a more potent Cleveland lineup.
Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline (-140), Over 8.5 Runs (-115)
