Cleveland Guardians +120 +1.5 (-165) O 9 (-115)
Boston Red Sox -140 -1.5 (+140) U 9 (-105)

Going against raw rookie Logan Allen who is coming off his first career Major League start, the Red Sox are -140 moneyline favorites to finish the month of April with a win.

Cleveland has been one of the better road teams this year, sporting a 9-6 record, as no other American League teams have notched more victories than the nine the Guardians have achieved as visitors. They’ve taken three of four series away from home this season.

Cleveland vs Boston Probable Pitchers

Fresh off an impressive performance in his major league debut against the Marlins, Logan Allen now gets to pitch his second game in one of the most historic stadiums in all of baseball. As long as he doesn’t get overcome by the moment and sticks to what worked for him in his first start, the freshman should be fine.

The southpaw struck out eight batters in six innings of work allowing only one run against Miami. At 24 years old, Allen shot up through the minor league system after being selected in the second round of the 2020 draft by the Guardians.

Coming into the season, he was the 85th-ranked prospect in the game according to Baseball America, while FanGraphs had him ranked number 57. If he continues to build off his first performance, he’ll be here to stay.

Allen vs Sale Stats

Logan Allen
VS
Chris Sale
1-0 Record 1-2
1.50 ERA 8.22
1.00 WHIP 1.74
.227 OBA .316
8.0 SO/W Ratio 3.0

On the other side, Chris Sale is still struggling to find the form that made him a constant contender in the Cy Young odds last decade. Dealing with a number of injuries, the towering lefty has made just 16 starts over the last four seasons.

Unfortunately for Red Sox fans, the 34-year-old just doesn’t have the type of stuff he once did. He’s made only one quality start this season and sports an ugly 8.22 ERA. In his last outing, Sale didn’t record a single strikeout in five innings of work, the first healthy start in his career where he did not strike out a batter.

Guardians and Red Sox Contrast in Hitting Styles

Although they have very similar records, the Guardians and Red Sox have been attaining their victories in very different ways. Boston has one of the most powerful MLB lineups ranking seventh in the league in home runs entering Saturday’s action.

Third baseman Rafael Devers is doing the bulk of the damage, leading the American League with 10 home runs including a first-inning three-run shot in Saturday’s 8-7 win over Cleveland.

On the other side, the Guardians rank near the bottom of the Majors in dingers, with only the Nationals sending fewer baseballs out of the park. They have put an emphasis on small ball, ranking first in the American League in stolen bases and second in the junior circuit in walks.

Of their eight road wins this month, seven have come by two runs or less, so they know how to close out tight games.

Guardians vs Red Sox Prediction

After falling just short in their comeback attempt on Saturday, it makes sense that the Guardians are underdogs in the MLB odds for the series finale considering the experience of the starting pitchers on each side.

However, we think Cleveland will carry over the momentum from battling back on Saturday and take the rubber match. The Guardians are a contact-hitting team that have struck out the least out of any AL team and will likely cause trouble for Sale who just doesn’t look right. Our pick is to take the road side at plus money.

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline (+120)
