The Baltimore Orioles (17-25) face the New York Yankees (29-12) on Monday at Yankee Stadium. The series opener has a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 pm ET. The Orioles will send Jordan Lyles to the hill, while the Pinstripes counter with Gerrit Cole.
The Yankees are huge favorites in this one and also big favorites at -235 to win the AL East after starting at +170. Meantime, the Orioles began the season as +50000 longshots to win the division — but have seen those odds lengthen to +75000. Hyde’s club is expected to win an MLB-low 62.5 games, while the Bronx Bombers are projected to win 92.5 in the MLB win totals.

Baltimore vs New York Probable Pitchers
The 31-year-old Lyles is coming off a seven-inning performance last Wednesday against these very Yankees that saw him surrender two earned runs and strike out a season-high eight. It was his third quality start among his last four outings.
Jordan Lyles (106 pitches) has retired the last 13 Yankees and 17 of 18 since the second inning. Cole at 88 pitches to start the Oriole 7th.

Lyles owns a 3.12 ERA through four starts in May. Through four starts at home on the year? That mark is just 2.10. However, this one is in the Bronx — where he owns a career record of 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA over 7.1 innings in two appearances (one start). He’s been a tough-luck loser in his last two outings — with Baltimore only scoring two runs in each game. That will have to change on Monday if he wants to avoid a third straight defeat.
Meantime, four-time All-Star Cole has rebounded quite nicely from an uneven first week-plus of the 2022 season. After failing to get through six innings in any of his first three starts, Cole has enjoyed five straight quality outings — and seen his ERA shrink from 6.35 to 2.80 — since. He’s coming off outdueling Lyles last week, putting up seven innings of two-run ball and striking out five in a 3-2 New York victory.

Baltimore enters as heavy underdogs with plenty of momentum after taking two of three from Tampa Bay. Rougned Odor had his second game-winning at-bat in three days as the Orioles beat the Rays 7-6 in 11 innings. The O’s are also emboldened by the addition of top prospect Adley Rutschman. The 24-year-old catcher was in the lineup for a second straight game on Sunday and went 1 for 4 with a hit by pitch.

Meantime, there’s no doubt Boone’s club is looking forward to moving on from the White Sox after dropping a doubleheader to Chicago on Sunday. There was plenty of controversy in the Bronx on Saturday after the Josh Donaldson-Tim Anderson dust-up. Donaldson was 0-for-4 in Game 1 — a 3-1 loss — and held out of Game 2, a 5-0 defeat. It will be interesting to see how he plays on Monday (if he’s in the lineup) following strong accusations by several players on the Pale Hose roster.
Major League Baseball is investigating yesterday’s events between the Yankees and White Sox.
Aaron Boone said that Josh Donaldson has been forthcoming about his history with Tim Anderson, but, “this is, just in my opinion, somewhere (Donaldson) should not be going.”

The Yankees currently have +600 odds to win the Fall Classic, while the O’s are at +75000 in the World Series odds.

Orioles vs Yankees Prediction
New York owns the best record in baseball and has one of the game’s best starting this game. But following the self-inflicted sideshow over the weekend, it’s unclear where this team is mentally. Baltimore isn’t as good as Chicago — but the O’s have played the Yankees tough this season. The Pinstripes may very well win. But that line is ridiculous.
Pick: Orioles +2.5 (-130)
