The Philadelphia Phillies (84-72, 37-38 away) finally snapped their losing streak. All it took it was date with the NL East bottom-feeding Washington Nationals (54-102, 25-53 home).

Philly won for the first time in six games on Friday over the Nats, and will look to start a new winning streak on Saturday afternoon. The two will play a doubleheader, after the second game of a scheduled twin bill on Friday was rained out.

Philadelphia vs Washington Probable Pitchers

With Friday’s victory, Philly’s lead for the NL’s final Wild Card spot remains at 0.5 games over Milwaukee. The Phillies are a +4500 longshot in the World Series odds, and will likely sneak into the postseason thanks to a soft remaining schedule. Philadelphia has three games left against the lowly Nats this weekend, and then a three-game set with a Houston team with nothing left to play for after locking up the AL’s top seed.

Kyle Gibson will get the ball on Saturday afternoon for Philadelphia, looking to shake off a pair of abysmal starts. He yielded seven hits and five runs last time out versus Atlanta, after coughing up 12 hits and 7 runs in his previous start against Toronto.

A date with Washington is clearly what the doctor ordered. Gibson won his only start versus the Nats this season, throwing 8 innings of one-run ball. Washington batters own a .213 career batting average against him, with a measly .260 OBP.

Gibson vs Sanchez Stats

Kyle Gibson
VS
Anibal Sanchez
10-7 Record 3-6
4.84 ERA 4.06
1.32 WHIP 1.24
.267 OBA .215
3.0 SO/W Ratio 1.4

The Nats will counter with veteran Anibal Sanchez. The 38-year-old got off to a rocky start to the season, but has been dialed in over his past seven starts. Sanchez has allowed two or fewer runs in each of those outings, posting a 1.31 ERA.

The stretch includes a date with the Phillies, but he didn’t come out for the 3rd inning after a three-plus hour rain delay. Current Philadelphia hitters have fared quite well versus him in the past, posting a .289 average and .926 OPS over 114 at-bats.

Phillies vs Nationals Betting Trends

Sanchez has been hit especially hard by Rhys Hoskins and J.T. Realmuto. The duo have combined for 13 hits, four homers and 12 RBI over 35 at-bats. Hoskins hit his 30th dinger of the year in Friday’s victory, giving him seven home runs versus the Nats this season.

Prior to Friday’s win, Philadelphia had been slumping at the plate. They’d scored just three times in their past three games, and had crossed the plate three or fewer times in nine of their past 13 contests. But facing Washington, cures all their woes. The Phillies have beaten the Nationals in nine straight meetings, and are slashing .274/.359/.546 against them this season.

As for the Washington lineup, they’re living up to their billing as a bottom-five offense. They’ve scored only five runs total in their last four games, and have crossed the plate three times or less in 10 of their last 11 outings. They’ve been outscored 46-23 during that stretch, while losing eight of those matchups.

Phillies vs Nationals Pick

Philadelphia is literally fighting for their playoff lives, while Washington is simply counting down the days until the season’s over. We can’t ignore the Phillies ridiculous track record against the Nats, and even though Sanchez is pitching well, Philly hitters have roughed him up in the past.

Philadelphia has outscored Washington by 37 runs over the past nine meetings, winning by at least two runs eight times. Let’s not overthink this one.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline (-205)
