Texas vs Detroit Probable Pitchers

Texas, a top-seven contender in the World Series odds, will give the ball to Dane Dunning. The 29-year-old has split his time between the bullpen and starting rotation this season, but given how well he’s fared as a starter it’s hard to envision him returning to a relief role.

Dunning has a lower ERA than any starter in baseball, but doesn’t qualify for the category yet having only made four starts. He’s allowed just four runs total in those outings over 22.2 innings, shutting down the likes of the Braves, Angels and Mariners.

Last time out, he scattered six hits and a single run to the Pirates, but didn’t factor into the decision. His stuff is far from elite, as he averages only 5.4 strikeouts per 9 innings, and has induced a tiny 8.9% swinging strike rate.

However, he’s one of only three pitchers with three-plus starts on their resume yet to allow a home run, and enemy hitters are slashing just .206/.266/.258 against him.

Detroit meanwhile, has yet to name a starter as of Tuesday evening, but are expected to use an opener. The Tigers are currently down a pair of starters as both staff ace Eduardo Rodriguez and Spencer Turnbull are on the injured list.

Regardless of who gets the ball for Detroit, they’ll have their hands full. The Rangers regulars form one of the most potent MLB lineups, and have already done a number on Detroit pitching through the first two games of this series.

Rangers vs Tigers Predictions

Texas pounded 13 hits en route to a 10-6 win over the Tigers on Tuesday, after blanking them 5-0 in the series opener. The Rangers enter play averaging a league-high 6.3 runs per game, while boasting a top-four slugging percentage and OPS.

They’ve been especially hot over the past two weeks, slashing .287/.346/.482, while winning 10 of 12. Marcus Semien ranks second in all of MLB in WAR at 3.2, while Adolis Garcia is sixth in home runs with 14. Eight Rangers in total boast a WAR of at least 1.0, which is five more than Detroit.

The Tigers were playing quite well prior to this series, as they’d rattled off four wins in five outings. The offense has started to come alive recently with six or more runs in six of their past nine contests, but they still rank among the league’s worst in most key categories.

Detroit is the third lowest scoring team in baseball, behind only Oakland and Cleveland. Their .229 batting average ranks 27th out of 30 teams, while only the Guardians and Nationals have clubbed fewer home runs. The Tigers enter play having hit only 46 homers, which is 55 fewer than the Rays.

We shouldn’t expect too much offense out of them when Dunning is on the bump, but things may open up once Texas’ bullpen gets involved. Rangers relievers have the fifth worst ERA in MLB, and the second lowest strand rate.

A fantastic offense and an underwhelming set of relievers are two of the reasons why the Rangers are one of the most profitable over teams this season. They’re 32-21-2 to the over so far, with nine of their past 15 outings clearing the total.

Pick: Over 9 (-110)
