The Octagon returns to Canada for the first time in 2019 for UFC Fight Night 151 in Ottawa, Ontario. And, in the main event, it is an important lightweight matchup between two fan favorites. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone takes on Al Iaquinta in what may very well be a number one contender fight with the winner fighting the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Dustin Poirier.

Fight Record and Recent History

Cerrone (35-11 and one no-contest) is coming off of a dominating TKO win over surging prospect Alexander Hernandez. Cerrone started out strong and picked apart the young gun before setting up a head kick which dropped him. Then, “Cowboy” went and finished Hernandez on the ground for a statement win for Cerrone as he re-entered the lightweight division.

Before that, Cerrone beat Mike Perry by submission in his final welterweight bout. Throughout his historic career, Cerrone has wins over the likes of, Benson Henderson, Eddie Alvarez, Edson Barboza, and Jeremy Stephens, among others.

Iaquinta (14-4-1) meanwhile, is coming off of a decision win over Kevin Lee in the rematch to go 2-0 against Lee. Before that, Iaquinta took on Khabib Nurmagomedov on just hours notice and went the distance with the Russian, where “Ragin Al” had success in the fight. Iaquinta also holds wins over the likes of Diego Sanchez, Jorge Masvidal, and Ross Pearson, among others.

This fight is a rather interesting one as it has numerous possible outcomes. Both Iaquinta and Cerrone have good standup games as well as solid ground games. Whoever wins this fight will be the one who implements their game plan.

Iaquinta is going to want to get after “Cowboy” and bring the fight to him as he is a notoriously bad starter.

For Iaquinta, he is going to want to get after “Cowboy” and bring the fight to him as he is a notoriously bad starter. However, for Cerrone, he will need to implement the leg kicks and use his reach to score points, and if the takedown is there, he needs to go for it.

Ultimately, this is a fight that is a tough one to call but in the end, I like the value on Cerrone and believe the dog gets it done.

Pick: Donald Cerrone (+120)

Elias Theodorou vs Derek Brunson Odds

Fighter Odds Odds
Elias Theodorou -110 -115
Derek Brunson -120 -105

Fight Record and Recent History

Theodorou (14-2) is riding a three-fight winning streak with his most recent win at UFC 231 in December. There, the Canadian beat Eryk Anders by split-decision, in which he had to overcome being rocked in the fight. In his career, Theodorou has beaten the likes of Dan Kelly, Cezar Ferreira, and Sam Alvey, among others. And, a noticeable stat on his record is that Theodorou has never been finished in his career, but hasn’t finished anyone since UFC 185 in 2015.

Brunson (18-7) is riding a two-fight losing streak, but the losses have come against top-five middleweights. In his last fight, Brunson got knocked out by Israel Adesanya in the first round. Before that he got knocked out by Jacare Souza. Brunson, however, does hold wins over the likes of Lyoto Machida, Dan Kelly, Uriah Hall, Sam Alvey, and Lorenz Larkin, among others.

There is a clear path to victory for both fighters. For Brunson, he needs to be able to knock Theodorou out, which not even Thiago Santos could do, which makes it seem unlikely. However, he does have knockout power and all it takes is one punch. But, the more likely outcome is Theodorou uses his game plan and grinds away to a decision win as he does in most of his fights. A win for Theodorou here would be big for his career and make him a top-10 middleweight.

Pick: Elias Theodorou (-110)
