With Anthony Davis back in the fold the Los Angeles Lakers will try to make a run up the West ladder.

Their opponent Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers, is in the midst of theirs in the East, thanks to an overpowering run by Joel Embiid.

It makes for an interesting matchup at Wells Fargo Center, with two teams pushing their way into the NBA Championship picture.

Philly, who’s won 12 of their last 15, are a 1.5-point home favorite. The public are also heavily backing the Sixers as you can see in the NBA betting trends.

It tips off at 7:30pm ET, and can be seen live as part of a TNT double-header.

Lakers Bottle Up Nets

Los Angeles improved to 2-1 on their season-long 6-game road trip with a 106-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets Tuesday night.

Anthony Davis made his return after a 17-game absence, and finished with a pedestrian line of eight points, two rebounds and two dimes in 25 minutes of work. However, he did register a game-high four blocks, restoring a defense that was one of the best in the last two years.

Even if the Nets were down both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, LA still held BK to under 100 points, and they improved to 6-0 on the season when doing so.

LeBron James continued his current hot streak, pouring in 33 points, seven boards and six dimes on a crisp 14-for-21 from the field. He’s now gone 18 straight games with 25+ points. James also had two blocks and three steals, including a pair of back-to-back steal-and-slams to get the BK crowd pumped.

The Lakers got potent contributions off the bench, with Malik Monk going for 22 and five boards, including a 6-for-12 mark from downtown. Carmelo Anthony added 13 points and three boards.

Embiid Carrying 76ers

Steph Curry may be the current betting favorite in the latest NBA MVP odds, but Joel Embiid has pushed his way into consideration, after a dominant stretch of games.

In the last 18 games, the Sixers’ big man has scored at least 31 points in 16 of them. He’s scoring at a 34.5 clip in January, while averaging 10.8 rebounds and shooting at a stellar 54.8% from the field.

At 28-19, Philly has moved to sixth in the East, two games above the play-in fray, but more importantly, just two games out of top spot in the conference.

Last time out, Embiid was his usual wrecking-ball self, pouring in 42 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in a 117-107 win over the Pelicans.

It was an important and impressive start to a 5-game homestand for the 76ers, who moved to 11-10 at home. The Sixers have been far better on the road, posting a 17-9 mark, tied with the Nets for the most road wins in the East.

Lakers vs 76ers Prediction

The Lakers’ recent betting trends are hard to consider, as AD adds a different dimension to LA’s game. They’re just 1-5 ATS in their last six head-to-head matchups with the 76ers.

The Lakers are also 2-7 ATS in their last nine against Atlantic Division competition. Philadelphia is a crisp 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games.

With a game that’s as close to a pick’em, I’m more inclined to look at the potential of the Lakers’ defensive prowess with AD back in the lineup, coupled with Philly’s 8th-best scoring defense.

In this particular matchup, the total has gone under in five of the last six games in Philly. Expect it to be six of seven.

The pick: Under 217.5 (-110)
