The Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks meet for the third time this season at Barclays Center on Sunday, March 13th. Brooklyn comes into this game off the back of consecutive wins, the second of which was a statement blowout of the Sixers. The Nets are six-point favorites over the visiting Knicks.

New York lost to Memphis last time out, a defeat which ended a three-game winning run for Tom Thibodeau’s team.

Brooklyn has won the previous two meetings this season, including a February triumph after the James Harden trade without Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant or Ben Simmons. The Knicks were blown away by Harden and Durant when the teams dueled back in November, but a lot has changed since then.

Both teams remain longshots when it comes to the NBA Atlantic Division odds.

Nets vs Knicks Injury Report

Kyrie Irving remains unavailable for the Nets despite some tweaks to the vaccine rules in New York. Ben Simmons is with the team, and enjoyed the win over Philadelphia from the bench. He’s not expected to return for this one. Joe Harris is out for the year after a second surgery, and LaMarcus Aldridge is listed as day-to-day having sat out the last two.

The Knicks didn’t have Obi Toppin, Nerlens Noel or Cam Reddish available for Friday’s loss to Memphis. It’s unclear if any of the three will be available here, meaning more minutes for Taj Gibson and Miles McBride off the bench.

Derrick Rose and Quentin Grimes remain sidelined, while Kemba Walker is away from the team for the rest of the season. Tom Thibodeau continues to ride his starters heavily, and the offense of Immanuel Quickley will be crucial in this one.

Struggling Knicks Offense Meets Nets Defense

Wins over the Clippers, Kings and Mavericks ended a lengthy slump for the Knicks. They were leading heavily against the Grizzlies too, but blew it in the fourth quarter. With three wins from their last 10, New York is still only 14th in net rating over that period, and down in 20th by the same metric for the season.

The offense is one of the worst in the league, even with RJ Barrett’s strong play over the last few weeks. They are around average in shots at the rim, but rank in the bottom five in converting such shots, and they rarely generate corner threes.

The Nets defense is far from lockdown, of course, ranking 29th in the league over the last 10. Seth Curry, Goran Dragic and Patty Mills are vulnerable on the defensive end. Alec Burks, Evan Fournier and Barrett have a considerable size advantage, making Steve Nash’s small ball lineups particularly vulnerable.

It remains difficult to get to grips with this Nets team. They won their last two in impressive fashion, but Kyrie Irving dropped 50 against Charlotte and played a big role in the win over Philadelphia. Despite their standing in the East, Brooklyn is third in the NBA Championship odds.

There was clearly extra motivation against the Sixers — does that carry over to Sunday afternoon?

Nets vs Knicks Prediction

Brooklyn has covered in just 40% of its games this year. That number drops to 17.4% as a home favorite. Yet, there’s only so much we can read into this given the amount of time Durant has missed and the turmoil the team has been through. They have a 6.7 net rating since the two-time Finals MVP returned, albeit with Irving playing in three of those contests.

Nash still has an array of options on offense, which when paired with Durant, could prove too much for the Knicks. New York has the 24th-ranked offense in the NBA since the turn of the year, and their defense gives up the third-most threes in the league, which is asking for trouble against this sharpshooting Nets team.

The Nets are +5.5 in minutes with Durant this season. Irving is a miss, of course, but they are simply a far better team than the Knicks when Durant is available. Take the home team to pick up a third straight win.

Pick: Nets moneyline (-255)
