The VCU Rams captured the Atlantic 10 regular season championship and closed the campaign on a six-game winning streak. Under normal circumstance that would be more than enough to earn preferential status among oddsmakers in the conference championship tournament. Not this year though.

No. 2 seed Dayton, not top seeded VCU, is the favorite to win the A10 tournament. The Flyers opened up as the +160 chalk, followed by the Rams at +180, and the no. 4 seed Saint Louis at +500.

Dayton finished second in the conference standings at 12-6, and had a worse overall record than both VCU and no. 3 sed Fordham. The Flyers grade out higher than any team in the A10 per KenPom’s overall efficiency metric though, and project as an 11-seed in the March Madness bracket.

Atlantic 10 Conference Schedule

The only way to get into the March Madness odds if you’re an A10 school is to win the conference crown. If VCU is unable to seal the deal, they’ll get an invite to the NIT as a consolation prize for their impressive regular season.

The tournament tips off on Tuesday, March 7th with opening round action for the bottom-six seeds. The winners will move onto the second round the following day, joining seeds five through nine.

Quarterfinal action is set for Thursday, March 9th and that will mark the first appearance of the top-four seeds. The semis will take place on Saturday, March 11th, with the Championship Game tipping off on Sunday, March 12th.

ESPN+ will provide streaming coverage for the opening round, before the coverage moves to USA Network for the second round and the quarters. CBSSN will broadcast and semis and final, with all games taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Atlantic 10 Betting Analysis

VCU is most famous for its magical Final Four run back in 2011. They’re looking to get back to March Madness after missing out last season, and have been dancing in nine of the past 11 NCAA Tournaments. They ripped off six straight wins to close the regular season, but there’s some hesitancy over whether or not this team is good enough offensively to win the A10.

The Rams defense is elite, ranking top-25 in the nation in points against. They held their opponents below 70 points in 16 straight contests down the stretch, and rack up steals at the country’s 12th highest rate.

At the other end of the floor, they’ve struggled with consistency at times, but that wasn’t the case over their final six games. They put up at least 73 points in each of those outings, cracking 80 points twice. VCU beat six of the top-eight seeds (not including themselves) including Dayton and Saint Louis twice.

The Flyers meanwhile, boast a strong defense as well leading the conference in points against. They stumbled down the stretch dropping two of their final three outings, but own victories over the top-four teams on the oddsboard after them.

Dayton has flashed a high ceiling, but can they be trusted? This team dealt with injury concerns during the regular season and are missing two of their top-five scorers. They rank eighth in the A10 in scoring, settle primarily for two-point attempts and are one of the five worst free throw shooting teams. Not exactly a recipe for success.

Atlantic 10 Predictions

Which brings us to Saint Louis. The Billikens were supposed to contend to be a top-25 team this season, but the defense hasn’t matched their offensive potential. Saint Louis ranks 211th in the nation in scoring defense, compared to second in the A10 in points per game.

The Billikens are loaded with depth as four players average in double-figures. Yuri Collins leads the A10 in assists per game at over 10, while Francis Okoro is the conference’s top rebounder.

They just knocked off Dayton to close out the regular season, and beat four of the other top five seeds behind them this year. Yes, they dropped both outings versus VCU, but they still had a ton of success offensively versus the Rams. They shot north of 40% from three in both outings. The Billikens were sloppy with the ball, committing 34 turnovers over the two games, and that proved to be the difference.

No team in the A10 is without significant warts. Saint Louis can outscore any team in the conference, and if they can clean up the turnovers they’re more than capable of winning this tournament. At +500, they’re the team to target.
