On the heels of a loss to George Mason where their 2nd half comeback fell short, Rhode Island (6-13, 6-12 ATS) hope to avoid falling below .500 on their home court when they host the Dayton Flyers (13-7, 9-11 ATS) on Wednesday, January 25th. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET from the Ryan Center.

These squads are on opposite ends of the Atlantic 10 standings with Dayton occupying 3rd place and Rhode Island just above the basement. The Flyers are 8.5-point favorites in the college basketball odds as they look to rebound from their own seven point loss.

We provide the Dayton vs Rhode Island odds below and also offer up our analysis for this clash. In addition, we’ll give you our best bet and prediction.

These are two of the more offensively challenged squads in college ball, so don’t be looking for a ton of buckets here. In terms of points per game, Dayton ranks 263rd in the country while the Rams check in at 299th dropping just 66.9 points per game. Both rank in the bottom 25 percentile in scoring in the nation.

Dayton Flyers Finally at Full Health

In their prior contest against George Washington, the Flyers finally had a fully healthy squad for the first time all year. No matter, it didn’t help them escape with a victory as they fell 76-69 in a game they never led once.

Two key components of Dayton’s team, Malachi Smith and Kobe Elvis, both made their returns to the lineup after missing more than 10 games each with injuries.

Undoubtedly, they should provide a boost to Dayton as they work themselves back into game shape. Both players averaged 25+ minutes of court time per game last season.

In their absence, sophomore Daron Holmes II has provided the bulk of the offense. The 6’10 forward is averaging 18.4 points per game on 58.6% shooting, accounting for over 25% of the Flyers offense.

Even though Dayton doesn’t score much, they’ve been handling opponents with ease as of late. They’re 8-2 in their last 10 and have a 19.4 point average margin of victory in those previous eight wins.

Rhode Island Betting Outlook

Nothing would please Rhode Island head coach Archie Miller more than to get a win against his former squad. He led the Flyers to back-to-back conference regular season championships in 2016 and 2017 and took them all the way to the Elite Eight in 2014 in the NCAA tournament.

His Rams are nowhere near a contender in the odds to win March Madness this campaign, as they aim to stay relevant in the conference. Recent meetings against his former team have not been kind to Rhode Island.

Offense was absent for both sides in their meetings last year as they totaled just 104 points in their first game followed by a total of 120 points in their second matchup. Dayton has taken six of the last seven contests between the two and also covered the spread six times in those tilts.

One bright spot for the Rams is sophomore Brayon Freeman. The guard is coming off a season-high 25 point outing after scoring 18 in Rhode Island’s prior contest against Richmond.

Dayton vs Rhode Island Prediction

The Flyers have their sights on the regular season conference title so they are in no position to drop games to bottom feeders, like the Rams. Showing a propensity to jump on inferior competition, Dayton are 11-2 against the spread in their last 13 games against teams with a losing record.

While the under is always an attractive pick with two low scoring sides like these in the college basketball odds, we feel the total for this contest is set too low at 129.5 to be comfortable making that wager.

Instead, take the Flyers to cover against a Rhode Island side that just isn’t at their level. The Rams are just 2-6 against the spread in their last eight, which makes our prediction of taking Dayton and the points an even more attractive bet.

Pick: Dayton Flyers -8.5 (-110)
