Loyola’s Schwieger Silenced

Senior forward Ryan Schwieger is Loyola’s top scorer with an average of 11.3 points a game.

However, the transfer from Princeton has been silenced in the Battle 4 Atlantis. He has scored nine points combined in two games, including four against Syracuse.

Junior guard Marquise Kennedy led Loyola on Thursday with 13 points, knocking down 6 of 8 field goal attempts.

Junior guard Braeden Norris was the only other Ramblers player to score in double figures with 10 points.

Loyola was outrebounded 36-26 and had 18 turnovers, including five by normally steady senior Lucas Williamson.

The Ramblers shot 61.9% (13 of 21) in the first half, including 46.2% (6 of 13) on three-point attempts, and trailed 34-32 at the break. However, those percentages fell to 30.8 (8 for 26) and 10.0 (1 of 10) in the second half when Loyola scored just two field goals in one 11-minute stretch.

Williamson is having a solid season with averages of 11.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Senior forward Aher Uguak has a 10.3 scoring average.

Balance Not Enough for ASU

Arizona State had six players score in double figures against Syracuse on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Orange’s hot shooting. Syracuse connected on 54.1% (33 of 61) of its field goals and outrebounded the Sun Devils 42-32.

Senior guard Marreon Jackson led Arizona State with 17 points, including five three-pointers, and seven assists. The points were a season high for Jackson, who transferred from Toledo after being the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year last season.

Sophomore guard DJ Horne knocked down four threes on his way to 14 points. Junior guard Luther Muhammad also had three triples to go with 12 points and five assists. Senior forward Kimani Lawrence added 11 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Junior guard Jalen Graham finished with 11 points and sophomore guard Jay Heath contributed 10 points. Heath is a Boston College transfer.

Arizona State made just 4 of 16 (25.0%) shots from behind the arc in the first half while falling behind 48-30. The Sun Devils improved to 47.8% (11 of 23) in the final 20 minutes when they got as close as seven points in the last three minutes before Syracuse held off the rally.

Jackson, Horne and Muhammad all hits three trifectas in the second half. Horne has 10 threes in the first two games of the tournament.

Lawrence is the longest-tenured player in Arizona State’s program and has picked up the scoring slack after the Sun Devils lost the top three scorers from last season. He is averaging 13.3 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Lawrence is also a willing baggage handler, according to ace Arizona State publicist Doug Tammaro.

Horne, a transfer from Illinois State, is averaging 12.0 a game while Muhammad and sophomore forward Marvin Bagley have 10.0 averages. Bagley has missed three straight games with a knee injury and did not travel to the Bahamas.

Loyola Chicago vs Arizona State Prediction

Arizona State is 2-0 all-time against Loyola but the series history is rather inconsequential as they teams haven’t met since the 1972-73 season. Nearly a half-century later, look for a veteran Loyola team to get its revenge against a rebuilding Arizona State squad still trying to find its legs.

The Pick: Loyola -6.5 (-110)
