Terps Struggling As Tough Stretch Begins

The Terrapins are about to get into the meat of their schedule and if their current form is any indication of how things will go, they’re about to go on a losing streak. The Terps started the year 4-0 but have since dropped three of four. Some of the losses haven’t been close either as they fell to Clemson by 14 and #19 Rutgers by the same margin.

Maryland’s main issue is that the scoring hasn’t been there against the quality teams. They’re only averaging 60.3 per game in the losses compared to 84.0 in the wins. They have three double-digit scores but two of them – Eric Ayala and Aaron Wiggins – have been way off their season averages in the losses.

Ayala is at 16.8 in the wins while Wiggins is at 11.6. They’re combining for just 19.0 points per game in the losses. That has to change if they’re to beat Wisconsin.

Badgers Are On A Roll

The Badgers enter Monday’s game riding a five-game winning streak while going 4-0-1 against the spread in that span. They’ve only lost once straight up this season, which was a 67-65 shortcoming to Marquette. That was a bit of a headscratcher as Marquette is now just 5-5 on the year but it wasn’t a huge upset at the time as the Badgers were only a 3.5-point favorite.

The oddsmakers have had a tough time figuring out this Wisconsin team. The Badgers failed to cover the spread in three of their first four outings but have since gone 4-0-1 ATS. They appear to be getting stronger as the season progresses as they just beat #12 Michigan State by nine and but an 85-48 hurting on No. 23 Louisville about a week ago.

The Badgers offense is one of the best in the country as they rank ninth in KenPom’s Adjusted Offensive Efficiency. They have four players who score in double-figures and one more who is close at 9.6. The Badgers are also strong at the other end of the court too, ranking fourth in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. Maryland could be overmatched here.

What’s The Best Bet?

Wisconsin has been a covering machine as of late and that won’t change here. Maryland has a close loss against Purdue but their other two losses – to Clemson and Rutgers – were by 14 points. They weren’t close.

The Badgers job here is quite simple: slow down Ayala and they should cruise. Ayala has shown that he’s prone to inefficient nights against good teams and that trend should continue here again.

Prediction: Wisconsin (-650)
