A pair of SEC rivals meet up on Saturday, October 15th as the “Third Saturday in October” gets underway. Although Alabama has dominated the series recently, this SEC matchup represents one of the most famous rivalries in all of college football history. This year’s Alabama vs Tennessee game features two top-ten teams with undefeated records.

The Crimson Tide enter this matchup after hanging on for dear life in a victory over Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa. Alabama won on the very last play of the game as A&M failed to punch the ball into the endzone.

Meanwhile, Tennessee decimated the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge last week. The Volunteers Bayou beatdown handed LSU coach Brian Kelly the worst home coaching defeat of his career. Tennessee will look to keep the momentum rolling on Saturday.

The 105th meeting between Alabama and Tennessee kicks off from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville at 3:30pm ET over on CBS. Until then check out all the odds, stats, and our best bet for Saturday’s Alabama vs Tennessee showdown.

A resurgent Tennessee program getting a 7.5 point spread as a home underdog looks like an intriguing bet. The total of 65.5 seems high for an SEC matchup of two first-rate defenses.

The nation loves to bet with Alabama. As of right now, 87% of bets placed with the spread are on the Crimson Tide.

Alabama Betting Trends

Tennessee last defeated Alabama in 2006, before Nick Saban came over as coach of the Crimson Tide. Since then, Alabama has dominated the series, with just two of the last ten games being decided by ten points or less. On Saturday, the Crimson Tide will renew festivities with the Volunteers, hoping to continue their dominance. After all, Alabama have won fourteen straight games versus the Volunteers.

However, the injury status of reigning Heisman trophy winner Bryce Young looms large on this matchup. In fact, the health of Young’s throwing shoulder has become arguably the greatest subplot in all of college football the past two weeks. The Crimson Tide offense sorely missed the presence of Young against Texas A&M and barely escaped with a victory.

In his stead, redshirt freshman Jalen Milroe threw three touchdown passes to lead the Tide to victory. Although, he also committed three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception) and looked unsure of himself at times. Head coach Nick Saban told the media on Monday he was “hopeful” Young will be ready to play Saturday at Tennessee. As of right now, conquering the Volunteers, much less the National Championship, seems like a tall task for the Crimson Tide without the services of their star pivot.

The betting trends are working in Alabama’s favor going into Saturday. Nick Saban’s squad is 5-1 against the spread in its last six meetings with Tennessee.

Tennessee Volunteers Trends

Tennessee has never defeated a Nick Saban-coached Alabama team. With that being said, this is arguably the finest squad the Volunteers have had in 15 years. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has assembled a dominant offensive force. Although Nick Saban may be known as one of the preeminent defensive minds in the sport, Heupel is quickly building a reputation as an offensive genius.

The Vols offense ranks first nationally in yards per game, and second in points at 48.5.

Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker leads an explosive offensive unit that is capable of piling up points on any defense. The Vols pivot has yet to throw an interception and will get star receiver Cedric Tillman back for this clash with the Crimson Tide.

Alabama vs Tennessee Prediction

For once, the “Third Saturday in October” matchup has major SEC and College Football Playoff implications. With a victory, Tennessee places itself firmly in the driving seat as the SEC favorite with a skirmish against Georgia looming.

All of the betting trends favor the Crimson Tide in this one, and as usual, the public is all over Nick Saban’s unit. However, times are changing down in Tennessee and this squad is as dangerous as any in college football. With the status of Bryce Young up in the air, we like the Vols to keep this one close.

Pick: Tennessee +7.5 (-115)
