Clemson Offense Back on Track

The transition from Trevor Lawrence to D.J. Uiagalelei took a little longer than expected, but the Tigers are back to posting the same kind of offensive numbers that made them so strong during Lawrence’s run from 2018-20.

Uiagalelei has taken a step forward in his second season as a starter, completing 64 percent of his passes (up from 59 percent a year ago) while flipping his touchdown/interception ratio. He has thrown 14 touchdowns and two interceptions after going 9/10 in 2021. He also has rushed for 311 yards and three touchdowns, second in rushing behind Will Shipley (446 yards, eight TDs).

The Tigers have benefitted from Uiagalelei’s improvement to average 39.3 points and 425 yards per game. They averaged 26.3 points last year, their worst figure in a decade, and remain a solid contender in the college football playoff odds.

The Clemson defense has played up to its standards other than the torching it endured from Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman, who threw for 337 yards and six touchdowns in the Tigers’ 41-35 double overtime road victory Sept. 24. Uiagalelei was equal that day, throwing for 371 yards and five scores.

Clemson is No. 2 in NCAA Division I in rushing defense, giving up an average of 63.7 yards per game and 2.2 yards per rush. They are giving up 256 yards per game through the air.

Florida State Hits Speed Bump

Quarterback Jordan Travis and the Seminoles have taken a step forward in coach Mike Norvell’s third season, but they enter this game fighting for their ACC lives.

Florida State has lost consecutive league games to No. 22 Wake Forest (31-21) at home and No. 14 North Carolina State (19-17) in Raleigh and are in danger of falling three games in the loss column behind the Seminoles. The NC State loss was particularly galling inasmuch as Wolfpack quarterback Devin Leary left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

The Seminoles blew a 17-3 halftime lead and had 79 yards total offense in the second half as their conference title odds dropped. Travis threw an interception in the end zone with 39 seconds left to decide the issue. Travis has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1407 yards, nine touchdowns and three picks.

Clemson vs Florida State Injury Update

Clemson starting defensive tackle Brian Bresee is expected to return after missing the last two games because of a kidney infection. He has six career sacks.

Seminoles’ leading rusher Treshaun Ward (488 yards, 6.8 yards per carry) will miss the game after suffering a shoulder injury against North Carolina State last week. Trey Benson (303 yards, 6.4 average) is expected to start.

Clemson vs Florida State Prediction

Clemson begins another challenging portion of its season in Tallahassee, with unbeaten Syracuse and Notre Dame on deck with a bye in between. Tough stretches have not fazed the Tigers in previous seasons and should not again. Clemson is 16-2 SU and 11-5 ATS as a road favorite the last four seasons.

FSU is improving, but it has a way to go to reach the Tigers’ level.

The pick: Clemson -3.5 (-110)

Last week: 2-4 ATS. Season: 20-19 ATS
