The inaugural Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl pits Utah State (10-3) against Oregon State (7-5) at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Playing in a bowl sponsored by a comedian is no laughing matter for Utah State (10-3) because it means the Aggies are Mountain West Conference champions. Utah State routed host San Diego State 46-13 in the conference title game for its seventh win in the last eight games.

Oregon State (7-5) lost to then-#11 Oregon 38-29 on the road in the regular-season finale but still gained its first bowl bid since 2013.

The Beavers are favored by a touchdown in a game that will be broadcast in primetime on ABC.

The spread has held steady after opening at 7.5 points. The temperature is expected to be 58 degrees at kickoff with winds from the northeast at 10 mph.

Utah State Having Renaissance Season

Blake Anderson engineered quite a turnaround in his first year as coach, leading Utah State to just the fourth 10-win season in school history, The Aggies were 1-5 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Anderson came to Logan from Arkansas State and brought along quarterback Logan Bonner and wide receiver Brandon Bowling. The two transfers teamed up to lead the upset of San Diego State.

Bonner threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns on 29-of-42 passing. Bowling had eight receptions for 154 yards and two scores.

The 46 points were the most ever scored in an MWC championship game – and Utah State did it against a San Diego State defense that allowed 17.5 points a game in the regular season.

Utah State held San Diego State to 178 yards and no touchdowns through three quarters while building a 29-6 lead. End Byron Vaughns, a transfer from Texas, was the game’s defensive MVP.

Bonner has completed 61.2% percent of his passes this season for 3,554 yards. He also has 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Though Bowling shined in the title game, Bonner’s favorite receiver has been Deven Thompkins, who has 96 catches for a school-record 1,589 yards and eight touchdowns.

Calvin Tyler Jr. is Utah State’s leading rusher with 764 yards and six TDs.

Oregon State Continues Program Build

Though Oregon State fell short against archrival Oregon to end the regular season, the Beavers will finish with their first winning record in eight years.

B.J. Baylor leads the Pac-12 in rushing with 1,259 yards, though he was slowed by Oregon. He has also run for 13 touchdowns and is averaging 6.0 yards a carry.

Baylor was limited to 13 carries against Oregon as Oregon State fell behind 24-3 by halftime and was forced to throw for most of the season half. He finished with 59 yards. After having four straight 100-yard games, Baylor has cracked the century mark only once in the last five games.

Chance Nolan threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as he tried to rally Oregon State in the second half. For the season, Nolan has thrown for 2,414 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 63.5% of his attempts.

Trevon Bradford is Oregon State’s top receiver with 40 catches for 606 yards and five TDs.

Oregon State will be without linebacker Avery Roberts (lower leg), who leads the Pac-12 with 128 tackles.

Utah State vs Oregon State Prediction

While Oregon State has ended its bowl drought, Utah State is playing in a bowl for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons. That comes after the Aggies went to just six bowls in the program’s first 119 years.

Oregon State will be making its 18th bowl appearance. The Beavers also won the last meeting between the schools, 20-16, in 1998 on the road.

The power conference team is favored but Utah State proved from midseason on, and especially against San Diego State, that it is dangerous. Look for the Aggies to keep it close if not win outright.
