  • Favorites and home teams held a 9-7 against the spread edge during Week 1 of the NFL season
  • The total went under in 11 of 16 NFL season openers
  • What NFL team trends should you be looking for entering Week 2 of the NFL season?

What NFL team trends did we learn about from Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season?

Revenge is supposed to be a dish best served cold, but it was ice cold for three veteran NFL quarterbacks who got the start against the old teams.

The Cleveland Browns finally found a way to win a season opener – get Baker Mayfield to QB the opposing team. The Browns beat their old QB and the Carolina Panthers 26-24.

Joe Flacco, who once led the Baltimore Ravens to the Super Bowl, was led to slaughter by the Ravens. They hammered him and the New York Jets 24-9.

Then there was Russell Wilson’s less than triumphant return to Seattle, as Denver lost 17-16 to the Seahawks. Well, it could’ve been worse. At least they didn’t get beat by Drew Lock.

Heading into Week 2, these are the NFL team betting trends to keep in mind.

Don’t Get Tied Down By this NFL Team Trend

There were presidential crimes being discovered. Inflation was rocking the country and people were up in arms about the price of fuel. It was 1973, the last year that there were two ties during the same week of the NFL season.

Tie Games During NFL Seasons

Season Ties
2022 1
2021 1
2020 1
2019 1
2018 2

2018 was the last time there were two tie games over the course of an entire NFL season.

During Week 1, history nearly repeated itself. The Houston Texans did tie 20-20 with the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, Chris Boswell kicked a 45-yard field goal with 56 seconds left in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 23-20 win over the Bengals.

Two things to remember here. Ties are both the worst Father’s Day gift and the most unlikely outcome in an NFL game. There’s been one tie in each of the past three NFL seasons, so don’t go betting on any more ties.

Lions are Sports Betting Super Bowl Contenders

The Detroit Lions almost won in Week 1. In fact, a safe bet might be that the Lions are the NFL leaders most seasons in almost winning.

You know who wins almost all the time, though? People who bet on the Lions to cover.

In Sunday’s 38-35 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Lions were 6.5-point underdogs. So they covered.

Detroit Lions Under Dan Campbell

Season Straight Up Against The Spread
2022 0-1 1-0
2021 3-13-1 11-6

Under head coach Dan Campbell, Detroit is 3-14-1 straight up. However, the Lions are 12-6 ATS. If there were a gambling NFL title, the Lions would be contenders in those Super Bowl odds.

Here’s another lock where the Lions are concerned – always check out the player props on Amon-Ra St Brown. He caught eight passes, including one touchdown, in Sunday’s setback.

Over the past five games, he’s snared eight passes and at least one TD catch in every game. He’s caught eight or more passes in each of his past seven games. That’s an NFL record.

Mahomes vs the AFC West

If you didn’t bet Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to go over 2.5 TD passes in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, what were you thinking? He threw for five scores. He’s hit for at least three in every Week 1 game of his NFL career.

Another wise choice would be to keep riding the Chiefs during Week 2 if you’re following NFL team trends. Mahomes is outstanding in September. Last season, he threw for 11 TDs, 940 yards and a passer rating of 111.7 for the month.

As they play host to the Los Angeles Chargers in a battle of the top two AFC West contenders in the NFL divisional odds, also remember that Kansas City is 36-5 SU in the past 41 games against divisional opponents.

Playoffs? We Talking About NFL Playoffs?

Nine of the 14 teams that ultimately qualified for last season’s NFL playoffs took an L in Week 1. Is it time to man the panic stations?

Hardly. Last season, both the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers were Week 1 losers. And they ended up being the #1 conference seeds entering the postseason.

Bill Belichick Off a Double-Digit Loss

Should you bet against an angry hoodie? There was a time when the angry hoodie was considered the most dangerous of beasts in the NFL wilderness. Then Tom Brady became a New England ex-Patriot and things suddenly turned.

New England got whipped 20-7 at Miami in Week 1. With Brady as his QB, the teams of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick went 24-6 straight up in the game immediately following a double-digit loss in NFL team trends.

Since Brady left for Tampa Bay, New England is 1-5 SU in that scenario.

With Tom Brady Without Tom Brady
24-6 1-5

Facing Pittsburgh in Week 2, the Patriots are 13-4-1 ATS in the last 18 games against the Steelers. But it’s a different world in this New England.
