It wasn’t exactly the greatest betting start to a season, but we were just a Joe Mixon or Pat Freiermuth TD away from being very profitable.

So the focus is getting out of the red and into the black, and why not make it a historic one — considering the Detroit Lions are betting favorites Sunday against the Washington Commanders.

It’s the first time in 24 games oddsmakers have tabbed them a favorite.

Kickoff goes Sunday at 1pm ET from Ford Field, a game that can be seen live on FOX.

Weather won’t be a factor as it’s inside a dome, so let’s run down the available NFL player props and a few of our favorite picks. Last week we went 2-3 for -0.30 units.

Odds as of September 10th at DraftKings Sportsbook

In the odds above, Carson Wentz is favored to go under 22.5 completions, while Jared Goff is favored to go Under 1.5 TD passes. The highest rushing total is given to D’Andre Swift at 61.5, and the highest receiving total is Amon-Ra St Brown at 63.5 yards.

Prop #1: Antonio Gibson Rushing Yards

It was a nice start to the year for the Commanders’ back, who did everything but find the end zone in Washington’s 28-22 Week 1 win over the Jaguars. Gibson rushed 14 times for 58 yards (just enough to get by this week’s total), while adding another 72 yards in the air on seven receptions.

The Eagles ran all over the Lions in Week 1, with Miles Sanders totaling 96 yards on 13 carries, while Jalen Hurts had 90 yards on 17 totes. In all, Philly rushed for over 200 yards.

Detroit hasn’t exactly been a run-stopping club in the Dan Campbell era. Since taking over last year, Detroit has allowed at least one running back to go over the 57.5 yard rushing mark 13 times in 18 games.

Look for the Commanders to establish the run, and for Gibson to have a good one on the ground.

  • Pick: Gibson OVER 57.5 yards rushing (-120); 1.5 units to win 1.25 units

Prop #2: Jared Goff Passing and Rushing Yards

The Lions have an above average unit of pass catchers, with Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds and TJ Hockenson among Jared Goff’s top targets.

But the top pick in the 2016 NFL Draft hasn’t been racking up passing totals like he did in his Rams’ heyday.

His line in Week 1: 21-for-37 for 215 yards, with two TD’s and an interception, has been about par for the course during his time in Motown.

Dating back to last season, that’s now 10 times in 15 games he’s failed to cross this week’s 242.5 yard total. With the Lions’ success in running the ball with D’Andre Swift, look for Goff to stay game manager vs game breaker.

There’s another bet you know I have to make: his rushing total. In his first 10 games as a Lion, Goff crossed 2.5 yards rushing twice, while not recording a single rush in six games.

However, including last week’s 9-yard rushing performance, he’s now gone five straight games with at least three yards rushing.

Let’s work smarter, not harder for our dough in our Commanders vs Lions picks.

  • Pick: Goff UNDER 242.5 yards passing (-115); 0.5 units to win 0.44 units
  • Pick: Goff OVER 2.5 yards rushing (-110); 1 unit to win 0.91 units

Logan Thomas (WAS) +1400 +215
Craig Reynolds (DET) +1800 +295

Antonio Gibson is the only player favored at odds-on to score an anytime touchdown on Sunday.

Commanders vs Lions Touchdown Scorer Odds

Nothing fancy here: Jamaal Williams tallied two touchdowns last week against the Eagles, and he’s the featured short yardage back in the red zone. He’s a good wager at plus odds.

On the Washington side, Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson all found paydirt against the Jags, so why not take a chance on veteran Logan Thomas (+215)?

He wasn’t featured heavily in Week 1, but he did have three catches on six targets, with two of those going for first downs.

  • Pick: Williams anytime TD scorer (+105); 1 units to win 1.05 units
