The trade market for running back Dalvin Cook was non-existent. As a result, the 27-year-old’s next team will come via free agency.

The Vikings released the four-time Pro Bowler last week, and while plenty of players have tried to recruit him to their respective teams, only one organization has shown any major interest.

Dalvin Cook Next Team Odds

Team Odds
Miami Dolphins +125
Denver Broncos +600
NY Jets +750
Dallas Cowboys +1000
Chicago Bears +1000
Buffalo Bills +1000
Cleveland Browns +1500
Kansas City Chiefs +1800

New England Patriots +3000
Cincinnati Bengals +3000
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3500
New Orleans Saints +3500

The Dolphins are the overwhelming favorites to sign Cook this offseason, boasting +125 odds to do so. Cook, one the biggest names left on the open market, was let go by Minnesota not for a lack of production, but more so price.

The Vikings know they can get comparable results from a much younger Alexander Mattison, at a fraction of the cost. Mattison counts for just $2.4 million against the Vikings 2023 cap, while Cook was set to make over $10 million.

Cook to Miami is No Slam Dunk

It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots between Cook and the Dolphins. Cook was born in Miami, and played his college ball at Florida State.

The Dolphins offense is already one of the most explosive in the league, fuelled by Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and Cook could be the missing piece that helps them seriously threaten the AFC’s heavyweights.

The issue, like it usually is, comes down to money. Cook still stands to collect $2 million this season from the Vikings, but is looking to make up the other $8 million he was set to earn. That likely prices him out of Miami’s range, unless Cook is willing to take significantly less.

He could opt to do so, but let’s face it. He’s on the wrong side of 25, and this will likely be one of his final opportunities, if not the last, to really cash in on free agency.

Dalvin Cook Rushing Stats – Last 4 Years

Year YDS AVG TD
2022 1,173 4.4 8
2021 1,159 4.7 6
2020 1,557 5.0 16
2019 1,135 4.5 13

Running back production tends to fall off a cliff at or around age 30, and more and more teams are preferring to draft RB’s and run them into the ground for four or five years before moving on. Which is exactly what the Vikings did.

Cook rushed for over 1,100 yards for the fourth straight year in 2022, but averaged a career-low 4.4 yards per carry. He also has seen massive touchdown regression over the past two seasons, scoring only 14 times on the ground, after posting 13 and 16 TD in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Also complicating a potential signing in Miami, is the Dolphins current RB room. They have over $6.7 million invested in four RB’s, including Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert, who are very comfortable running Mike McDaniel’s zone run scheme he brought over from the 49ers.

Cook may be a better talent than any running back on Miami’s roster, but not at a cost that is three to four times as much as anyone else. Bottom line, Miami may be an attractive destination for Cook, but there are too many red flags to wager on them at a such short odds.

Other Candidates to Consider

Which brings us to the Broncos. Denver has just under $9 million in NFL salary cap space at the moment, and a big need in the backfield. Yes, they spent a second round pick on Javonte Williams in 2021, but he tore multiple ligaments in his knee last year. He’s expected to return at some point during the 2023 season, but the team is non-committal about when.

The depth chart is pretty bare behind him, and Sean Payton is not about to let Russell Wilson try to win games on his own at this stage of his career. Denver offers nice value at +600 to sign Cook, but a little further down the board is where we’re going to target.

That’s where we’ll find the Bills, who are in the midst of their championship window. Buffalo is lacking a dynamic player in the backfield, and the addition of Cook would alleviate a lot of pressure off Josh Allen. Year after year, the Bills rank at or near the top of pass rate over expectation, making them a hair too predictable on offense.

Letting Cook pound the rock for 15-20 times a game versus likely light boxes could push the Bills over the top. Buffalo knows its Super Bowl window is closing, and have shown the willingness to spend on high priced free agents in the past, bringing in Von Miller last year.

The Bills will have to get creative with their cap space to make this happen, but at +1000 they’re the top value on the board.

Pick: Buffalo Bills (+1000)
