Conventional wisdom in the NFL is that you hired a previous coach that was short, the next one will be tall. Or if they were older, the next one would be younger. In the case with outgoing Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, who was a specialist on defense, the logical assumption would be they’d hire an offensive coach to run the ship.

Oddsmakers, however, are not jumping to that conclusion after the Fangio-led Broncos compiled a 19-and-30 record over three seasons, where they missed the post-season each time. They’re honing in on former Atlanta Falcons Head Coach and current Dallas Cowboys coordinator Dan Quinn to be the next man in charge. He’s followed by Jim Caldwell and Leslie Frazier as the next most logical hires.

After Quinn’s tenure ended with Atlanta, it seemed he perhaps wouldn’t be a hot commodity to be a head honcho again – but after the Cowboys resurgence on the defensive side of the ball, he’s suddenly in demand again. In this article we’ll take a look at the Broncos potential replacements for Fangio.

Broncos Casting A Wide Net

Once one of the proudest NFL franchises, the Denver Broncos have fallen into a big hole in the last several seasons. They haven’t had a winning record in five years and their Super Bowl 50 title is firmly in the rear view mirror. To restore their past glory days, president John Elway and GM George Paton are doing their due diligence in a coaching search, looking at several candidates.

The name that’s come up often is current Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. He won a Super Bowl in that same role with the Seahawks and took the Falcons to the final game as Head Coach of the Falcons. He’s also overseen a defense that went from a disaster in Big D last year, giving up the fifth most points, to a unit yielding the seventh least amount of points this year.

Even though he presided over a squad that blew a 28-3 Super Bowl lead, Quinn is obviously still very highly thought of in league circles – the only thing is, he’s a defensive guy. As stated earlier, so was the previous man at the helm in Vic Fangio, so will Denver look to the other side of the ball?

Other Options For Broncos

One name that has been percolating for some time is Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. He’s been in charge of a Chiefs offense that has led them to two straight Super Bowls, and it feels like someone will give him his much deserved opportunity. Stealing him away from their division rivals also has to be attractive for Elway and Co.

The Broncos have some nice pieces of defense, a really strong receiving corps and a good young running back in Javonte Williams – what they don’t have, and have struggled to find since the Peyton Manning era, is a franchise quarterback. Bringing in an offensive minded coach who has worked with QB’s and is an offensive coordinator could be just what the doctor ordered for either Drew Lock, or a passer selected in the draft.

Enter Cowboys offensive coordinator (and former quarterbacks coach) Kellen Moore. He’s young at 33 years of age, and the feeling around the league is he could be in the Sean McVay mold. This season, Dallas was first in points per game (31.2), compared to Denver (19.7).

With several teams in on Quinn, it’ll be hard to land him, and the team might be better off having an offensive coach who can groom a young franchise QB. At +1300 odds, Kellen Moore sports great value.
