  • Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns and Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys remain +750 co-favorites to win the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award
  • Neither player has ever won the honor
  • Reigning NFL DPOY Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers is the fourth betting choice at +1000 in the Defensive Player of the Year odds

When it comes to the NFL DPOY Award, voters are down with down lineman. They’re happy to line up alongside linebackers. And they’re also fond of players who perform on the edge.

Eleven of the last 12 winners of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year were either defensive tackles, defensive ends or linebackers. Only New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore in 2019 was able to break through this stranglehold on the award.

Looking ahead to the 2023 season, oddsmakers aren’t seeing any change coming to this trend. In the betting lines for the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds, 12 of the first 13 players listed in this betting market play DT, DE, or LB.

Garrett Has Tools to Be NFL DPOY

In many ways, Garrett is a microcosm of the team for which he plays. Much like the Browns, a lot has been expected of Garrett since he arrived in Cleveland as the first overall selection of the 2017 NFL Draft. But again like his team, Garrett hasn’t been to put it all together and deliver any big prizes.

Physically, the 6-foot-4, 272-pound Garrett is built to excel. His combination of size, athleticism and speed off the edge make him a dangerous defender. He has the ability with his length to almost bend his way around blockers in order to make plays. His massive wingspan also allow Garrett to easily wrap up ballcarriers in a tackle for loss, or quarterback for a game-changing sack.

He’s accounted for 32 sacks over the past two seasons and at least 12 in four of the past five seasons. That being said, Garrett has never been able to assemble that one dominant, statement season that would put him over the top in the NFL DPOY balloting.

Parsons Was #2 Last Season

In a bizarre bit of balloting a year ago, Parsons was the runner-up to Bosa in the NFL DPOY Award voting. Oddly enough, he came home second without registering a single first-place vote on any ballot.

While it’s to make an argument that Bosa wasn’t a deserving winner, at the same time, the fact that no voter among the 50 who cast ballots saw him as the NFL’s best defender is beyond baffling. He finished with 13.5 sacks and a league-leading three fumble recoveries.

It also figures to add extra motivation to a guy who seems to be living life with a permanent chip on his shoulder. Parsons was the betting favorite to win this award last season and figures to be a solid bet to win it again this season.

Any Value to Consider in DPOY Odds?

Gardner was an outstanding rookie, but the problem with elite corners is that eventually, teams just don’t want to challenge them. If you’re thinking about value in a 2022 NFL rookie, look to Detroit Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson. The #2 pick in the draft finished with 9.5 sacks and three interceptions.

It’s worth noting that generally, the favorites in the opening line of the NFL DPOY odds don’t win the award. Nick Bosa opened as the third betting choice last season. TJ Watt, the 2021 winner, was also third in opening-line betting.

Watt is also this year’s third betting choice, if you like to follow trends.

Pick: TJ Watt (Steelers) +850
