Rested Lions Ready to Roll

Detroit enters Week 6 coming off of their bye week with a two-game winning streak in tow.

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson made the decision to stay in Detroit this off-season, and that’s paid off. The Lions are fourth in explosive play rate, and sixth in expected points added per play.

Most significantly, Detroit ranks seventh in rushing yards per game (151.3) and fourth in rushes per contest (32.3). In other words, Dan Campbell loves to play smash mouth football. If the Lions ground game get’s rolling on Sunday, the Cowboys are in big trouble.

On defense, the Lions have surrendered just 20.5 points per game, and 0.325 points per play. They’ve also allowed opposing offenses to convert on only 31.71% of third downs this season, good for seventh in the NFL. Despite not playing last week, star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson leads the league with 6.5 quarterback takedowns.

It’s important to note, the Lions are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games versus bottom 10 scoring defenses.

Cowboys Aim To Build Momentum

Led by Dak Prescott, the Cowboys are second in the league in passing yards (271.6 per game), but 31st in rushing yards (82) and yards per rush (3.5).

Dallas has gotten next to nothing out of its backfield, with Rico Dowdle averaging just 4.1 yards per carry, and returning former star Ezekiel Elliott rushing for just 3.3. But, the Cowboys offensive line hasn’t done them any favors. Mike Solari’s big men have been a bottom-tier unit this season, ranking 18th in PFF’s run-blocking rating and just 26th in pass-blocking.

Additionally, the Cowboys injury report reads like a Tolkien novel. Star pass-rusher Micah Parsons has yet to practice this week, and will remain out with an ankle injury. Both inside linebackers Eric Kendricks and Nick Vigil also missed practice and will likely join Parsons on the sidelines.

All-Pro guard Zack Martin hasn’t made the practice field all week, and Trevon Diggs also popped up on the injury report on Thursday. That’s five starters Mike McCarthy’s squad will dearly miss on Sunday. Rookie linebacker Marist Liufau will have to put together the performance of his life to stop Detroit’s rugged, downhill rushing attack.

Importantly, the Cowboys are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games at home.

Detroit Lions vs Dallas Cowboys Prediction

After last season’s controversy, the Cowboys have won five straight games against the Lions. But, that doesn’t mean much. Detroit is the far more talented football team.

Back the Lions to win by at least a score in Week 6.
