New York Jets head coach Adam Gase just keeps on surviving. His team is 0-7 and he’s long been favored to be the next head coach fired, but others have beaten him to the punch. As we head into Week 8, Jacksonville Jaguars bench boss Doug Marrone is making a strong case to get canned but will he be next or is Gase still the best bet?

Jaguars Losing Steam By the Week

The Jaguars started the season with a win over the Indianapolis Colts. There’s no debating the quality of that win as the Colts are a healthy 4-2 on the season. The Jaguars played the Tennessee Titans close in a 33-30 loss in Week 2 but since then, the Jags have mostly been in decline.

Overall, Jacksonville has now lost six in a row and what’s concerning is there are very few bright spots on the roster. Nobody was expecting a playoff berth from the youngest roster in the NFL but this team can barely remain competitive week to week. They’ve lost three straight times by at least double digits and handed the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals their only wins of the season.

The Jags were not a good team last season (finished 6-10) but there was an air about them that they could compete and surprise on any given week. Nowadays, the expectation is they’re going to lose each and every week.

Roster Has Taken a Step Back

The Jaguars saw a number of nice pieces emerge last season that gave the impression that this team might have a foundation in place. Gardner Minshew II looked like he was capable of being a decent starting quarterback, wideout DJ Chark was a Pro Bowler and then-rookie Josh Allen picked up 10.5 sacks.

Fast forward a year and Minshew has a meager 53.7 QBR, which is 25th in the NFL, Chark has collected just 291 receiving yards and Allen has but two sacks. Nobody expected Marrone to make something out of nothing here but the reason he’s on the chopping block is this team is not developing. Worse yet, there are chemistry issues after Chark called out Minshew after the last game.

The Jaguars are 26th in points per game and yards per game, and the defense is 30th in yards and 28th in points. There aren’t many areas where one can point to and say that the Jaguars are excelling. That’s what is eventually going to cost Marrone his job.

What’s the Best Bet?

The Jaguars have a bye week, so that will buy Marrone a bit of time. After that, they face a brutal schedule the rest of the way with seven of their final nine games coming against teams who are currently in playoff position. The issue is that the Jags have little to gain by firing Marrone now.

Gase still makes the most sense because the Jets are pulse-less and they look like they could really use a change. They lost by eight last season, which was their smallest margin of defeat on the year. They’re bound to lose as a 19-point underdog at the Kansas City Chiefs this week and then if they can’t beat New England at home, that’s likely it for Gase. Marrone should survive beyond that.
