Eagles Waste Opportunity in Week 13

After blowing yet another golden opportunity on Sunday to pull even with the Dallas Cowboys atop the NFC East standings with a 37-31 loss to the Miami Dolphins, while favored by 10.5 points, Philadelphia now sports a 5-7  record going into next Monday night’s contest at Lincoln Financial Field.

Despite struggling to generate offense in consecutive losses to Seattle and New England in their previous two home outings, the Eagles proved to be strong performers at the sportsbooks ahead of Sunday’s date in Miami.

The Eagles opened as 8-point chalk against Miami in the wake of a disappointing 17-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12, and steadily gained momentum at sportsbooks, hitting the gridiron at Hard Rock Stadium as lofty 10.5-point favorites. But after blowing a 14-point second-half lead in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, sports bettors may think twice about backing this team, and with good reason.

Philadelphia opened as 3-point chalk in its Week 12 date with Seattle before fading to a 2.5-point underdog by game time. The Eagles also displayed similar movement a week earlier, opening as 3.5-point underdogs in their Week 11 matchup with New England before fading to +5. In both cases, the Eagles disappointed loyal sports bettors with an ATS loss, contributing to their current 1-4 ATS record on home turf.

Free Falling Giants Staying Resilient in the Odds

And while earlier this season a clash between Philadelphia and New York would have been considered more of a mismatch, New York could attract some attention at sportsbooks this week. The Giants put up little resistance in a lopsided 31-13 loss to the visiting Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon. Pegged as 7.5-point home underdogs in the Week 13 opening odds, the Giants improved to +6.5 by game time in their eighth straight defeat, a run that now includes a 0-4 ATS record on home turf.

However, the Giants have proven to be remarkably resilient in the NFL odds when playing on the road this season. New York improved to a 6-point underdog in its Week 12 visit to Chicago after opening at +7, and gained ground from a 2.5-point opening favorite to 3-point game-time chalk in a Week 10 date with the New York Jets. That trend extends to all but one of the Giants’ road contests this season, with the exception of their Week 6 trip to New England.

NY Keeping it Close on the Road

The Giants have failed to steadily reward sports bettors this season, compiling a 4-8 ATS record. But New York has managed to keep things close on the road, covering in three of its six away contests, and has seen each of its past two road defeats come by seven or fewer points.

That is a trend that extends to recent road dates with the Eagles. The Giants have suffered outright losses in each of their past five visits to Philadelphia, with the combined margin of defeat in their three most recent losses adding up to 11 total points.

Philly has struggled at home this season, scoring fewer than 14 points per game in their past three home dates. And with the confidence of sports bettors likely to be badly shaken in the wake of Sunday’s embarrassing loss to the Dolphins, it will be difficult for the Eagles to maintain their position as lofty favorites as the week progresses.
