Biggest Week 1 NFL Line Movements

Let’s look back to when these lines first opened back in May to see where the largest NFL line moves have come from.

This one not only moved four to five points but it also saw the favorite in the game completely change. In May, the Steelers opened as 2.5-point favorites, but heading into Week 1 the 49ers are now favored by 2.5-points.

That likely has much to do with the fact that Brock Purdy who had elbow surgery as recently as March and was expected to miss time this season, has been declared the starter for Week 1. The 49ers were 13-4 last season, while the Steelers were just 9-8. Purdy was 8-0 as a starter last year before getting knocked out of the NFC Championship game versus the Eagles.

Biggest Total Movement In Week 1 NFL Odds

When the Panthers vs Falcons total opened in May it was set at 43.5. Perhaps there was some optimism about new rookie QB Bryce Young. If there was, some of that has faded.

Bettors aren’t expecting there to be many points in this contest between the Young-led Panthers and the Desmond Ridder-led Falcons. The NFL line movement today shows this Panthers vs Falcons total has been bet down to 39.5, a move of four points since May.

The past eight number one overall picks have failed to win in Week 1. Interceptions are also a trend when it comes to first round picks starting in Week 1, with none failing to throw an INT since 1990. The Panthers scored just 17, 21 and zero points in their preseason games this summer.

The Falcons scored zero, 13 and 19 points in their preseason schedule. Ridder has played four NFL games in his short career.

Biggest Week 1 Spread in NFL Odds

The return of Lamar Jackson is expected to be too much for CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Ravens are the biggest Week 1 favorites as 10-point chalk. If you you need NFL spread betting explained, that means that Baltimore is favored to win by ten points, easily making them the biggest favorite of the week and a prime candidate for NFL Survivor picks.

The Texans are working in a new rookie QB in Stroud, DE in CJ Anderson and head coach in DeMeco Ryans. The Ravens have some injury concerns but Lamar Jackson is back at QB and Baltimore have a 45-16 record when he starts. The Ravens are also typically good in Week 1. In the past six years they’ve won five of their opening week games by scores of 20-0, 47-3, 59-10, 38-6 and 24-9. They lost once, in 2021, 33-27 in overtime.

Shortest Week 1 Spread in NFL Odds

No more Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay has levelled the playing field according to oddsmakers when it comes to this week’s NFC North rivalry between the Packers and Bears. With Chicago listed as one-point home favorites, this game is basically a pick’em and takes the title as the shortest Week 1 NFL spread.

Bettors seamingingly can;t decide if Jordan Love and Packers can continue the Green Bay dominance of Chicago. The Packers have won eight straight in the rivalry as well as 23 of the past 26. Can Justin Fields reverse that trend on Sunday?

Highest Week 1 Total

The season opener between the Detriot Lions vs Kansas City Chiefs would have taken the title as the highest Week 1 spread at 52.5, but as that game is complete we’ll look down the NFL betting lines for the next contender.

And next up is the Dolphins vs Chargers with a total of 51 on Sunday.

These teams ranked 11th (Miami) and 12th (LA) in points per game last season with 23.8 and 23.4 PPG respectively. However, both were Under teams last season with Miami being 8-9 and LA being 7-10. And when these teams played each other last season the Chargers won 23-17, which would fall way Under this total.

Lowest Week 1 Total

Little is expected of the Arizona Cardinals this season and there are few points expected to be scored in their Week 1 game versus the Commanders. The Cardinals vs Commanders total is set at just 38.

Washington went 5-11-1 to the Under last season, while Arizona was 9-8 to the Over. Both teams are working in new starting quarterbacks this season with Arizona throwing some combination of Josh Dobbs and Clayton Tune out there, and Washington starting Sam Howell ahead of Jacoby Brissett.
