  • Patrick Peterson has reportedly demanded a trade from the last-place Cardinals
  • The three-time All-Pro cornerback is reportedly frustrated with the deteriorating situation in Arizona
  • The Eagles and Saints have emerged as most likely trade partners

The rumor mill quickly heated up this week following reports that three-time All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson had requested a trade from the struggling Arizona Cardinals.

Selected fifth overall by Arizona in the 2011 NFL Draft, Peterson has been one of the few bright lights on a Cardinals squad that has stumbled to a 1-6 record, capped by last week’s crushing 45-10 home loss to Denver as one-point underdogs.

Oddsmakers have now posted a prop on whether Peterson will be dealt before the 2018 trade deadline (Nov. 14) in their NFL Specials section, along with a prop on his potential landing spot.

Yes +150
No -200

Despite reports connecting Peterson to deals with several potential suitors, the former LSU star remains a longshot to be traded by Arizona, sporting +150 odds.

Ongoing Trade Speculation

Speculation surrounding Peterson’s future in the desert has been simmering since early in the season, forcing Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks to repeatedly deny that the team was shopping the seven-time Pro Bowler.

The rumors have been further fueled by the team’s dismal performance on the field. Arizona has been limited to 14 or fewer points on four occasions this season while averaging an NFL-worst 220.7 total yards per game, dumping them to distant +15000 longshots on the odds to win the NFC West.

Peterson sought to quiet the rumors on Wednesday afternoon with a tweeted statement, expressing his frustration with how the season has unfolded, and reiterating his commitment to the team in this weekend’s clash with the San Francisco 49ers, where they are ominous one-point underdogs once again.

Arizona Cardinals -200
Philadelphia Eagles +200
New Orleans Saints +300
Pittsburgh Steelers +1000
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +1500

Eagles, Saints Emerge as Potential Destinations

Obviously, the Cardinals odds on this prop (-200) are the same as the odds that Peterson doesn’t get traded.  After the incumbent Arizona, the Philadelphia Eagles have emerged as a strong +200 bet to acquire Peterson’s services, just ahead of the New Orleans Saints at +300.

The Eagles’ secondary has taken a step back since playing a crucial role in the team’s first-ever Super Bowl victory last season. Philadelphia was embarrassed while blowing a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter in last week’s 21-17 loss to Carolina, and looks toward Week 8 with a pass defense ranked 24th in the NFL.

New Orleans has also struggled against the pass this season, surrendering 13 passing TDs while recording just two interceptions.

The Saints took steps to address their needs in the secondary by acquiring cornerback Eli Apple from the New York Giants this week. However, Peterson would represent a significant upgrade on Apple, who has endured injury and reported locker-room conflict since entering the NFL as the 10th-overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Steelers Players Warm Up to Potential Deal for Peterson

The Pittsburgh Steelers sit well back of the Saints as a +1000 bet to land Peterson, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain in the hunt, sporting +1500 odds.

A groundswell of support is reportedly building among Steelers players who’d like to see Peterson make a move to Pittsburgh, with Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger publicly warming up to the idea. However, the price for Peterson may now be too high following the deal earlier this week that sent Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a pricy first-round pick, further buoying short -200 odds of the Cardinals resisting the urge to pull the trigger on a deal for their star cornerback.
